Honduran Fugitive Arrested in South Florida
Honduran fugitive wanted for slaying is arrested in South Florida.
BY ALFONSO CHARDY
Federal agents have arrested 20 foreign nationals who fled their countries after committing crimes, including a Honduran found in South Florida as a suspect in the slaying of a former aide to ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya.
Besides the suspect in the ex-official's killing, two other fugitives picked up in South Florida included another Honduran and one Dominican.
The arrests marked the latest ICE roundup of foreign fugitives. But the ICE statement said the most recent roundup, which started Sept. 1, was the first joint operation with Interpol, the international police organization headquartered in Lyon, France. Interpol issues international notices advising law enforcement agencies around the world about criminal fugitives.
Code-named Operation FAR AWAY, the roundup resulted in the arrest of the 20 international fugitives, all hiding in the United States including the three in South Florida, according to the ICE statement.
Of the 20 arrests, ICE said, eight were for homicide, two for crimes against children, three for robbery, and seven for other crimes, including human smuggling.
The fugitives in South Florida were arrested or deported between September and October, ICE said.
Perhaps the most significant South Florida case involved Carlos Yacaman Meza, 38, sought as a suspect in the June killing of Roland Valenzuela, 44, who had served in Zelaya's administration as administrator of an agency known as National Programs for Sustainable Development.
Zelaya was ousted by troops in June 2009. Published reports of Valenzuela's killing last June in San Pedro Sula indicated that it happened during an altercation with another man. One account said the suspect was named Carlos and had started the argument over money.
According to ICE, on Sept. 8, an ICE team in Miami arrested Yacaman Meza, in a joint operation with the FBI, the Hollywood Police Department, and the Broward Sheriff's Office. Yacaman Meza was arrested in Hollywood.
ICE officers had obtained information that Yacaman Meza had been living in Miami-Dade. Yacaman Meza was later transferred into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service in Miami pending extradition to Honduras, ICE said.
The second Honduran, MartĂ*n JesĂşs Mendoza, 47, was removed from the country Oct. 4 as a suspect in the storage of prohibited firearms and explosives in Honduras.
ICE agents picked him up Aug. 10, after learning from Interpol that he was residing illegally in South Florida.
The Dominican, Eddy Bismark Nuñez Garrido, 33, was arrested Sept. 15 after agents found he was living in Plantation and was wanted in the Dominican Republic for murder.
