Local legal efforts
Dec. 25, 2006
Horry County Councilman Marion Foxworth is sponsoring a law that would penalize landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and business owners who employ them.
Foxworth's bill remains at the council committee level. It must be passed on the full council before it has a shot at becoming law.
Foxworth has said the law would protect local businesses and residents who are competing against a low-cost illegal workforce, made up mostly of Hispanics who have crossed the southern border of the United States in recent years.
It is unclear how Horry County businesses and landlords might react to the proposal and how it might affect the local economy, Brad Dean, president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, said when the law was proposed in October.
