Federal law enforcement authorities are helping the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office investigate a shooting incident in which one man was killed and another wounded in White Post earlier this month, Sheriff Anthony Roper said last week.

Roper said he met with agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on July 22. He also said that his office is working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, who enforce immigration laws.

Roper has said that a suspect in the shooting, identified as Jose Cuevas-Gonzalez, was in the country illegally. As of last week, the suspect was still at large, Roper said.

The shootings occurred July 9 on Nelson Road in White Post near the driveway to the farm where Cuevas-Gonzalez worked, Roper previously has said. A man identified as Juan Francisco-Cortez was found shot to death and a man identified as Daniel Guerrero-Lopez was wounded and were found in a black sport utility vehicle, Roper has previously said.

Roper said he learned from talking with immigration officials that one of the victims was in the country illegally.
