    Huckabee changes tack on illegals

Huckabee talks a bit tough on illegal immigration. I just don't believe the Huckster's sincerity and committment to stopping illegal immigration. I believe he's till committed to amnesty, the DREAM Act, etc. His track record in Arkansas on illegal immigration is abysmal.

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, seeking to blunt criticism of his record on immigration, has issued an extensive new plan that calls for illegal aliens to return home voluntarily, pushes employers to check workers’ status and would end several legal immigration programs.

It marks a major change in tone from Mr. Huckabee’s tenure as governor of Arkansas, when he campaigned for illegal-alien students to be eligible for college scholarships and financial aid and complained about federal raids on work sites that employed illegal workers. In his book earlier this year, he also called for a way for illegal aliens to earn citizenship.

In his new plan, Mr. Huckabee makes no mention of a path to citizenship, instead saying illegal aliens should be given a grace period to leave the country or be barred from returning.

“Those who register and return to their home country will face no penalty if they later apply to immigrate or visit; those who do not return home will be, when caught, barred from future re-entry for a period of 10 years,â€

Mike Huckabee Calls for Border Fence, No Amnesty in Immigration Plan
    Friday, December 07, 2007

Standing on the platform of his newfound popularity in national polls, Mike Huckabee released a get-tough immigration enforcement plan Friday — one that could serve to counter criticism that as governor of Arkansas he supported tuition breaks for children of undocumented residents.

Huckabee called the nine-point proposal a "tough, equitable and comprehensive approach" to immigration, which has emerged as one of the most contentious and pivotal issues in the Republican race.

The plan is similar to those put out by his GOP rivals. In it, Huckabee proposes constructing a border fence with surveillance cameras by July 1, 2010. He also suggests increasing the number of border patrol agents and imposing steep penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants.

The plan also calls for a zero-tolerance policy toward amnesty and states that all illegal immigrants would have a 120-day window to register and leave the country. Under the proposal, those who register and leave will face no penalty, while those who do not, if caught, will be barred from the United States for 10 years.

Huckabee corrected an earlier version of his policy that made reference to the now-defunct Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). The amended plan now properly lists the agency as Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS).

Huckabee's proposal quickly drew criticism from a spokesman for rival Fred Thompson, Jeff Sadosky, who said it "contradicts everything he did as governor."

He pointed out that Huckabee denounced a 2005 raid on illegal immigrants at an Arkansas poultry plant and gave $1,000 in state funds to help children whose parents were arrested.

As Mr. Lincoln said, "You can fool some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time".Mr. Hucklebee's sudden conversion from an illegal immigration supporter to a get tough policy on illegal aliens shows that most politicians will do anything to get elected,no matter how it affects the perception of his or her character with the American voter. He,and other sudden converts to enforcing immigration laws, have not fooled many but themselves.

issued an extensive new plan that calls for illegal aliens to return home voluntarily
That will happen when pigs grow wings!

I'm sick of these politicians saying they don't support amnesty when in fact they do. For example, John McCain said the path to legalization for illegals that was included in the last comprehensive immigration reform plan the U.S. Congress (Senate) attempted to pass was not amnesty. He said it didn't qualify as amnesty because the illegals would be paying for their crime. According to McCain, he doesn't support amnesty. It's all doublespeak, and I for one am sick of it!

I'm convinced there are only two current presidential candidates that will absolutely never consider any form of amnesty - and I think we all know who they are.

In '04 when Silky Poodle "changed tack," we said he "flip-flopped" and heaped ridicule on him like Pancake House T-shirts, rubber sandals, etc. He deserved it and so does Huckabee. Iowa's response to him conjures the word "gullible." At best, he'll now have to explain to a less-naive public what changed.

If you look at the sites that quote Huckabee, he says the "worker" has to go home to apply. That slick trick was handed to us earlier as a compromise during the fight over amnesty. The "worker" goes home but the family stays at our expense until the "worker" comes back.

Huckabee is just trying to deflect attention from his weak record on illegal immigration. If anything, this should make us more determined to alert Iowa voters and others as to his poor record on illegal immigration and raising taxes.

Look at his actions, not his campaign words.
