Hundreds Use Fake IDs for Food Stamps

Raleigh, NC — A state audit has found that hundreds of people have used bogus Social Security numbers to obtain food stamps.

From July 2002 to last April, 1,906 people were receiving food stamps from the state Department of Social Services based on invalid Social Security numbers, the audit report stated. Another 1,237 food stamp recipients were using the Social Security numbers of dead people, according to the audit.

DSS security measures had previously disqualified 5,840 people from the food stamp program after determining they were using phony Social Security numbers, according to the audit.

DSS officials said they have developed new screens to help validate the Social Security numbers of all food stamp recipients.

Why aren't social services, free school lunch programs, public health services, welfare, hospitals, drivers license renewal, car registration and HUD housing using the E-verify system?

Prosecute fraudlent use of social security numbers and if illegally in this country--deport.

E-verify isn't just for employers anymore.

I shudder to think what HUD housing would uncover.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I have been approached in a grocery store line by a fellow hispanic offering to sell me her food stamps/WIC vouchers for cash. Racial profiling? Absolutely.

Makes me soooo angry! My tax dollars at work GRRRRRR.

Why is we the people know this kind of abuse of our system is going on and yet it is always a surprise to government officals.

I agree until people start going to jail for fraud and offical are not held accountable for not doing their job, nothing will change.

Then just look at all of the hearing in DC for abuse of programs #1 Lost money in Iraq, or stuff not being inspected coming into our country,The abuse in Veterans Hospitals and taxpayers wasted or stolen money, housing scams, credit card inerest scams by banks, it goes on and on, is anyone ever held accountable or prosecuted....NO so it is all a waste of time and taxpayer money
