A vast percentage of New Yorkers now support a border wall touted by former President Donald Trump, according to a Siena College Poll released Thursday.

Approximately 41% of New Yorkers said they support the construction of a wall spanning the entire length of the southern border, as opposed to 50% who don’t, according to the Siena poll. The support for a crackdown on illegal immigration comes alongside a growing crisis of thousands of migrants coming into New York City every month, with the mayor declaring last week that the problem will “destroy” the Big Apple.

“A majority of Republicans oppose a comprehensive immigration bill and a huge majority, 77-19%, call for building ‘The Wall,’” Don Levy, Director of Siena College Research Institute, wrote in a press release on Tuesday. “Democrats strongly support, and over half of independents want the legislation, and while two-thirds of Democrats oppose building a wall, independents are evenly divided.”

Additionally, 42% of New Yorkers surveyed believe incoming migrants take more resources than they provide in return to the city’s economy, while 48% disagreed, according to the poll. In late August, 82% of New Yorkers said the city’s growing migrant crisis was a “serious problem,” according to a separate Siena poll.

New York City has cared for over 100,000 migrants since last year with 10,000 more coming in every month, straining shelter systems and city resources. Adams announced on Saturday a 5% budget cut to all city-wide programs and services, and warned New Yorkers days prior that the migrant surge is “going to come to your neighborhoods.”

“Never in my life have I had a problem that I didn’t see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this. … This issue will destroy New York City,” Adams said Wednesday. “Every community in this city is going to be impacted. … We have a $12 billion deficit that we’re going to have to cut – every service in this city is going to be impacted.”

The survey was conducted from Sept. 5 to 8 among a sample size of 800 New York City residents, according to the poll. The margin of error was approximately plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
