US Human Rights Network calls for halt to ICE raids in Mississippi

On Monday August 25, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a raid at Howard Industries in Laurel, Mississippi that resulted in the arrest of more than 350 undocumented workers. Among the many arrested workers were heads of households and pregnant women. While Catholic Social Services and other community organizations have accounted for more than 150 children of the workers, dozens are still unaccounted for.

This ICE raid is the latest blow to undocumented workers and employers in Mississippi, coming soon after legislative passage of an anti-immigration bill (SB 298, which mandates that employers conduct verification checks of all employees and subjects undocumented employees as well as employers who do not comply to harsh sanctions. The arrested workers now face not only deportation but the real possibility of criminal prosecution. The new law makes working in the state of Mississippi while undocumented a felony and calls for "imprisonment in the custody of the Department of Corrections for not less than one (1) year nor more than five (5) years, a fine of not less than one thousand dollars ($1,000) nor more than ten thousand dollars ($10,000) or both... Anyone charged with the crime of working without papers will not be eligible for bail."

"The raids in Mississippi have a significance that go well beyond the borders of that state," says Ajamu Baraka, Executive Director of the US Human Rights Network. "These raids violate international human rights standards and are designed to evoke fear in migrant communities across the country. Lou Dobbs and the Minutemen should not be setting U.S. immigration policy."

The US Human Rights Network has information that immigration raids might continue in Mississippi until Wednesday, which means that families will continue to be torn apart, more children will be abandoned, and more workers will be charged as felons for the crime of seeking to provide for their families. "It is a real contradiction with our supposed values that ICE is arresting workers and locking up their families," says Bill Chandler, Executive Director of Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance. "In the name of fighting terror, ICE is creating terror in communities in Mississippi."

In conjunction with their failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation, states across the country have increasingly taken it upon themselves to undermine the rights and dignity of workers under the guise of upholding U.S. law. To anyone who values universal human rights and the obligations that come with them, this is unacceptable.

No no no my friend, it is BECAUSE of the inability of the federal government to move fast enough to enforce our laws, states have had enough and US citizens of those states have DEMANDED that states UPHOLD and ENFORCE the law and deport ALL illegal aliens. It's not under any guise, we really want ALL illegal aliens deported. Their universal human rights are the obligation of their own home countries and should be taken care of there, allowing them to stay here and continue to flout our laws is totally unacceptable!

Illegal aliens undermine the rights and dignity (among other things) of American workers AND violate our laws. What about OUR human rights and dignity when we can't get jobs because those jobs are undercut by illegal aliens???
MIRA,USHRN, et al. can go protest in the illegal aliens countries and demand their human right all you want, we don't want them here at all!

Wait! Explain to me how human rights are accorded to those in the country illegally, breaking the law again by working when not allowed and American people, shoved aside with no jobs and no means to support their familieis by the mass influx of illegals, are so far down on the scale of human rights as not to count at all?
Furthermore, following the logic of the USHRN, why is not the IRS not guilty of human rights violations, or even the local traffic cop who arrests a drunk driver with no license in a stolen car?

Hey Ajamu Baraka, Lous Dobbs and the Minutemen DO NOT SET IMMIGRATION POLICY! YOU MUST BE AN IDIOT OR HAVE A TERRIBLE SENSE OF HUMOR.

America has immigration laws that have been on the books for a long time. Finally, they are being ENFORCED, to the delight of all Americans.
ICE IS DOING A FANTASTIC JOB!

Tell you illegal immigrant friends that they have brken the law by entering the U.S. and 80% of the American people want them deported!
RIP Butterbean! We miss you and hope you are well in heaven.-- Your ALIPAC friends

Re: Human Rights Alert! USHRN CALLS FOR HALT TO ICE RAIDS IN

This what I emailed that wonderful Governor that I WISH we had in Maine! Someone to stand up and say ENOUGH!!!

Good job Governor!!! Stand your ground. Illegals should have NO RIGHTS in this country! If you push forward and get a hold of your state, maybe other Governors will do the job we want them to also.

They are a drain on our economy and Federal money. The suck up welfare, our prison space, our American jobs, close our hospitals with all their FREE care. Giving out Anchor Baby status to illegals is insane. Stop everything America!!!

They expect our schools to teach their (too many kids) English. They are dumbing down the school systems and American kids are not being taught to their potential. They are bloodsucking leeches to America and need to be gone through attrition.

Fine the employers, even shut them down. People who employ illegals need to pay up the worth of the raid and police work. The illegals then turn around and sue us? Who's letting that happen?

The ACLU is the most useless organization to America that I can think of. They are NOT working for us when they waste their time and money on someone who came here ILLEGALLY and not an American that needs help.

I am NOT against immigration at all. They learn our language, pledge our flag, love America, assimilate, learn our history and last of all, they are Proud to be an American. They also add to our society.

While I'm at it, I think that refugees should have 2 years before having to also go thought the process of being an American. Maybe then they will fit into our land better too, and appreciate us most likely saving their lives and family's. Ours in Lewiston just complain and expect prayer rooms and footbaths??? What happened to our American laws......ridiculous!

    Again thank you Governor Barbour..

I called this organization and the lady was rather rude.
she first did say that the organization does seperate legal against illegal then when i asked her to clarify it, she said we advocate for all immigrants. then i asked about 2988 and i said im in favor of it if it stops someones identity from being stolen. then she hung up.
so i called back and said you dont need to be rude, all i was trying to do wa get some info on your organization and what it stands for. then she referred me to www.yourmira.org their website for anything else and apparently when I asked if she had a problem, if it can be proven these illegals were working under stolen or forged IDs, that they serve jail time and were deported. she said. i cant give you a personal opinion on this.

OH i forgot, one of the comments were "no one is illegal"

Wouldn't it be nice for a change to see some of these groups sticking up for the rights of Americans for a change instead of all the illegal immigrants.
We can't deport them all ? Just think of the fun we could have trying!

If you are sick of America having illegal immigration lawyers dictating our laws here in America or telling us how to enforce our laws, please contact:
    Patricia Ice at 601- 940-6749.

Then send a nice letter to the wonderful Governor in Mississippi.
    Email him at governor@governor.state.ms.us

I attempted to email the governor but received an invalid address "governor@governor.state.ms.us". The governor's website did not or I could not find an email address. Guess I will call in the morning.
