A man was arrested this weekend in Rockville after driving his car into three benches provided for customers of a Twinbrook area Dairy Queen and a parked truck, police said. A crowd of ice-cream eaters directed a patrol car toward the suspect, who investigators say had fled in his vehicle.

A 9-year-old boy was knocked off one of the benches by the impact and suffered a minor leg injury.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Veirs Mill Road, police said. When a nearby Rockville police officer arrived at the scene, a crowd of dozens pointed toward a black Pontiac, yelling that it was the car responsible for hitting the benches.

The officer chased the car onto Atlantic Avenue and then onto Crawford Drive, where the Pontiac went the wrong way on the one-way street, police said. It hit a Ford F-150 pickup, then went about 100 feet before stopping.

Police said the Pontiac's driver first told officers his name was Jose Ramos, but his front-seat passenger was found to have a similar name. After more questioning, the suspect told police his name was Juan Carlos Cabrera, 28, of no fixed address.

He is being held on $5,000 bond and will have to produce valid identification before he can be released.

Cabrera was charged with three counts relating to driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street, failure to stop after damaging an unattended vehicle and driving without a license.

Cabrera's front-seat passenger was released without being charged, but a rear-seat passenger who identified himself as Norman Anaez Zelaya, 18, of no fixed address, was arrested in connection with having false identification
