Huntsman doesn't make Arizona ballot

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. failed to get on the Republican primary ballot in Arizona, despite being the candidate with the best geographic claim to the western state.

The other major candidates qualified, but his failure signals that Mr. Huntsman, who skipped the Iowa caucuses last week and is making New Hampshire's primary on Tuesday his first stand of the campaign, doesn't have the kind of organization needed to go deep into the contest.

The deadline was 5 p.m. Monday. Ballot positions for the 23 candidates who did make it will be drawn Tuesday for the state's primary, looming at the end of February.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry could find himself at a slight disadvantage given the presence of Al "Dick" Perry, who also qualified for the GOP's primary ballot.

While most candidates made the Arizona ballot, that was not the case in Virginia, where only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul qualified. Four other candidates, including Mr. Huntsman, are suing to try to reopen the process, and on Monday a judge halted distribution of absentee ballots ahead of a hearing he has scheduled for Friday.
