PHOENIX - A local human rights leader was released from jail after being arrested for standing across the street to watch a protest of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s crime sweeps on Friday.

Salvador Reza was greeted by cheers as he left the downtown jail Saturday morning.

Supporters of the Puente Movement leader held a candlelight vigil for him overnight.

Reza said he was standing across the street from a rally when sheriff's deputies arrested him. Protestors called the arrest unjust and said Reza was being held as a political prisoner.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Reza was violating the terms of his earlier jail release that stated he was not to be near any other protests.
