SIOUX CITY -- A Mexican citizen has pleaded guilty to federal charges of possessing false documents.

Aminadad Mendoza-Acevedo, 22, entered his plea in U.S. District Court to possessing a false document and a false resident alien card that he used to gain employment.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mendoza-Acevedo admitted during his plea hearing to crossing the border from Mexico to the United States in October 2005 with the aid of a smuggler and that he falsely completed an employment eligibility verification form with a construction company in Arlington, Iowa.

He faces up to 10 years in prison.

    Let me get this right.
An IA can ADMIT to possessing false document and our governmet will lock them up in jail for up to 10 years. BUT, our government KNOWS that millions upon millions of IA possess these same documents but wants to grant them amnesty? These IA possess these documents because they make/forge them, steal identities, buy them and so on, but our government turns a blind eye unless they ADMIT to it?
    What a freaking joke.

Somebody needs to steer the incarceration/deportation policy in a way that maked financial sense. I guess there is no way that that can happen until the border is 100% secure--and that includes entry by sea and air, too. Locking them up for ten years would easily cost half-a-million dollars; but when they are deported they just come back Maybe the deportees have trouble re-establishing themselves, so just come back to where they know they can get some money--in the underground US economy.

I wonder how many billions of US$ the local, state and federal prison systems are spending to keep the illegal criminals locked up?

    Investigations need to go further

Every time one of these guys gets busted for using false documents to secure illegal employment, ICE should be also going to pay a visit to the employer and auditing their records. Then local officials need to be reporting the employer to the appropriate state taxing authorities, department of labor and wage and hour divisions for possible prosecution for violations in those areas as well. It needs to be a coordinated effort on all fronts otherwise this means nothing. The IA will come back b/c of our unsecured borders or run to a neighboring sanctuary state and the employer gets off scott free.
