IA:Immigrant rights advocates plan 48-hour vigil
Immigrant rights advocates plan 48-hour vigil
Associated Press - June 4, 2007 6:34 PM ET
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Immigrant rights advocates are camping out in downtown Des Moines.
Dozens of them opened a 48-hour vigil today to protest parts of an immigration reform bill being debated in Congress.
Organizers say they'll have at least four people in place until Wednesday morning to light candles and talk with passers-by about immigration reform.
Congressional and White House officials have been working to strike a compromise on an immigration plan that would allow votes as early as tomorrow.
Protesters say they are pleased with the progress, including proposals such as requiring a background check for visa applicants as well as requiring them to pay taxes.
Yet, protesters say some parts of the plan are unworkable.
Alex Orozco is an event organizer with the United for the Dignity and Safety of Immigrants. He says increasing border control is inhumane, and he says the fines that immigrants would have to pay to become citizens are too steep.
