IA: Universities Reaching Out to Hispanic Students

Universities Reaching Out to Hispanic Students

July 6, 2007--Some Iowa universities and colleges are trying out new ways to recruit more Hispanic students. The number of Hispanic students at Iowa's public schools has increased from just over 4,000 in 1985, to more than 28,000 in the last couple of years. That's nearly a 600-percent increase.

College officials say a future work force shortage worldwide means they need to reach out to everyone who can or wants to work. Opponents of the effort say they're worried about illegal immigrants not assimilating into society and failing to master English skills.

How about they reach out to qualified Amercian citizens? I am sure there are plenty qualified American citizens of all races and ethnic back grounds.
