March 26, 2005

Federal agents arrested two customs agents for allegedly trying to extort US500 from a merchant in exchange for waiving taxes on goods the victim was bringing from the United States into Mexico, officials announced recently.

Detained by agents from the Federal Agency of Investigation (AFI) were Enrique Edú Villagomez and Raúl Lázaro Trujillo, former chief and inspector, respectively, for Mexico's customs department in the northern border city of Mexicali, in Baja California state.

The two allegedly demanded a payment of US500 from the owner of a trucking and shipping company in Mexicali, in exchange for waiving taxes on goods being brought into Mexico from the United States. They were captured at the moment the business owner was about to hand over the money, according to a news release from the federal Attorney General's Office.

Investigators seized US1,519 and 1,124 pesos (US100) during the arrest.

Authorities did not say how they tracked down the two agents.
