SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officers arrested 20 illegal immigrants during a five-day sting, officials reported Friday.
The operation, which wrapped up Thursday, was focused on immigrants with a final removal order, criminal convictions, or criminal charges. ICE did not provide details about the locations of the arrests or the names of those targeted.
ICE officials said 85 percent of those arrested had prior convictions or charges including drugs, weapons offenses, hit and run crashes, DUI, theft, domestic violence, fraud, and evasion.
“Targeted operations like this reflect the vital public service that ERO officers do every day to protect the nation, uphold public safety and protect the integrity of our immigration laws and border control,” said Field Office Director Gregory Archambeault. “We will continue to conduct similar operations, while seeking to ultimately remove criminal aliens with a final order of removal and other immigration fugitives who pose a threat to public safety.”
The primary targets of the operation will be removed from the United States, ICE officials said.
Enforcement response officers arrested 158,581 immigrants in fiscal year 2018, according to ICE. 90 percent of those arrested had criminal convictions, charges, or previous final orders of removal.

SAN DIEGO — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation officers arrested 20 people with final removal orders throughout San Diego County this week, the agency announced Friday.
The five-day operation, which “focused on immigration fugitives with a final removal order and a criminal conviction(s) or a criminal charge,” concluded Thursday, according to a news release.
Eighty-five percent of those arrested during what the agency named Operation Cross Check VII had prior criminal convictions or charges, including drugs, weapons offenses, hit-and-run, driving under the influence, theft, domestic violence, evading law enforcement and fraud criminal offenses, according to the release.
In addition to those targeted in the operation, officers also arrested seven immigration violators, whom they took into ICE custody and processed for removal.

ICE to begin nationwide immigration raids Sunday
Nine major United States cities are bracing for impact following reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement will move forward with an operation targeting migrant families with court-ordered removals that was previously called off in June.
The New York Times first reported on the raids, saying they are expected to take place in at least 10 cities, will occur “over multiple days” and will include “collateral” deportations in which “authorities might detain immigrants who happened to be on the scene, even though they were not targets of the raids.”
ICE had planned to arrest and deport families with court-ordered removals in 10 cities in late June, according to a senior immigration official. The raids were expected in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York and San Francisco.

ICE Conducts Weeklong Enforcement Surge in San Diego
By Erika Cervantes and Brenda Gregorio-Nieto
Published 2 hours ago | Updated 9 minutes ago
U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement tells NBC 7 that San Diego County was a part of a weeklong enforcement surge.
A spokesperson for ICE said 20 undocumented immigrants with a criminal history were arrested.
This comes as ICE is getting ready for a major immigration sweep on Sunday in 10 U.S. cities. San Diego is not publicly listed as one of the 10 cities where ICE raids will happen this weekend.
Local immigrant rights activists said ICE agents are often seen in San Diego.
"I think fear is a real factor, I think it's our biggest obstacle to be able to provide information about what their rights are," said Pedro Rios from the American Friends Service Committee.
Rios said ICE agents were out in the South Bay and North County on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. So, even though San Diego isn't on the list for large scale raids this weekend, being arrested is a constant concern for many.
"It still doesn't mean people aren't affected by their presence," adds Rios.
Several immigrant rights groups are holding "Know Your Rights" training's. People are given flyers and red cards teaching them about what to do if ICE agents show up at their door or approach them on the street.
"There is definitely a lot of tension in the community but there's also a lot of resistance,” said Rios, “People are tired of always having to be living in fear, so this is why we've seen an increase for ‘know your rights’ training's."
The weeklong enforcement surge concluded Thursday. Of those arrested, 85 percent had prior criminal convictions including drugs, weapons offenses, and hit-and-run charges.
“Targeted operations like this reflect the vital public service that ERO officers do every day to protect the nation, uphold public safety and protect the integrity of our immigration laws and border control,” said San Diego ICE Field Office Director, Gregory Archambeault. “We will continue to conduct similar operations while seeking to ultimately remove criminal aliens with a final order of removal and other immigration fugitives who pose a threat to public safety.”

ICE arrests 20 in San Diego as part of a week long operation
By WENDY FRY JULY 12, 2019 5:13 PM
San Diego — The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said Friday agents arrested 20 people in San Diego for final removal from the country as part of a week-long operation dubbed Operation Cross Check VII.
An ICE spokeswoman said it was a routine enforcement action and not part of the rumored nationwide deportation sweeps scheduled to begin Sunday.
Officials originally said San Diego was not one of the target cities where the raids were planned to take place.
President Donald Trump said in June “massive deportations” were scheduled to take place. He then backed off the threat, resurrecting it last week as he signed a $4.6 billion emergency border aid bill passed by Congress.
The immigration enforcement agency said the “five-day enforcement surge focused on immigration fugitives with a final removal order and a criminal conviction(s) or a criminal charge.”
A news release posted online Friday said the arrests included a 31-year-old man from Oceanside who had previously been sentenced to 144 days for a DUI conviction and is a Mexican national.
It also included a 33-year San Diego man who had previously been removed to Mexico seven times.
ICE said records show the 33-year-old man had two additional DUI arrests and was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.
He was removed from the United States on Tuesday, an ICE spokeswoman confirmed.
ICE Spokeswoman Lauren Mack said there were 20 arrests of those targeted by the operation and seven “collateral arrests,” which is an arrest of someone who may not have final deportation orders but is in the same location where the operation takes place.
Of those arrested, 85 percent had prior criminal convictions or prior criminal charges, she said.
Convictions for those arrested included drugs, weapons offenses, hit-and-run, driving under the influence, theft, domestic violence, evading law enforcement and fraud criminal offenses, the agency said in a news release posted online Friday.
President Donald Trump told reporters Friday that sweeping immigration raids were set to begin this Sunday.
“It starts on Sunday and they’re going to take people out and take them back to their countries, or they’re going to take criminals and put them in prison or put them in prison in the countries they came from,” Trump told reporters in Washington as he boarded Marine One. “We are really specifically looking for bad players but we’re also looking for people who came into our country not through a process, they just walked over a line, and they have to leave.”
