Four people were sentenced this week in U.S. District Court on federal immigration charges.

They are:

• Casimiro Jimenez-Santos, 23, of Mexico, was sentenced to time served for one count of unlawful re-entry after deportation. He was also ordered to serve a term of one year supervised release following his incarceration and pay $100 to the Crime Victims Fund.

In addition, Jimenez will be surrendered to the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal or deportation proceedings

On Sept. 1, 2009, Jimenez was stopped by police while driving a vehicle in Johnson County, Iowa. The vehicle was stopped by deputies because it was registered to a person who was barred from driving. The defendant had no driver’s license. Police called ICE agents, who determined that the defendant was a previously removed alien.

• Jose Ismael Lopez-Alvarez, 27, of Honduras, was sentenced to five months imprisonment on each of two counts of fraud and misuse of documents, with those sentences to run concurrently. He was also ordered to serve a term of three years’ supervised release following his incarceration and pay $100 to the Crime Victims Fund for each count of conviction.

In addition, Lopez will be surrendered to the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal or deportation proceedings.

On Jan. 19, 2005, the defendant applied for employment at Quality Inn & Suites in Iowa City. The defendant filled out an I-9 form claiming to be an alien authorized to work in the United States. As supporting documentation, the defendant submitted a counterfeit permanent resident alien card and Social Security card. The number on the resident alien card was an actual number but was registered to another person living elsewhere in the United States. The Social Security number was a non-existent number.

• Juan Reyes Espiritu, age 34, a citizen of Mexico, was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegal re-entry after deportation. Espiritu was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release and pay $100 to the Crime Victims Fund.

On July 11, 2009, the Coralville Police Department conducted a traffic stop of a van driven by Espiritu. Espiritu provided a false Mexican driver’s license. The van contained nine illegal aliens. A search of the van also resulted in the seizure of several false identification cards and Social Security cards. ICE Agents identified Espiritu and obtained his immigration records.

Espiritu had been administratively removed from the United States in 2001. After illegally re-entering the United States he was charged in 2006 in Michigan for being in the United States without permission and sentenced to five months in federal prison. After serving his sentence and being deported in April 2007, Espiritu illegally re-entered the United States again in December 2008.

• Lorenzo Javier Lujan-Pena, 28, of Mexico, was sentenced to 57 months imprisonment for one count of unlawful re-entry after deportation. He was also ordered to serve a term of 3 years supervised release following his incarceration and pay $100 to the Crime Victims Fund.

In addition, Lujan will be surrendered to the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal or deportation proceedings.

Lujan came to the attention of law enforcement on July 25, 2009, when he was arrested in Clinton County, Iowa, for OWI. Lujan was previously removed from the United States following his earlier convictions on two counts of aggravated assault.
