MARSHALL, Minn. -- Jairo Yanes was a junior at Marshall High School up until Monday, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents caught up with him to deport him back to El Salvador.

His mother brought him and his brother to the United States while they were just kids.

Recently, friends found out he arrived illegally to Marshall and they tried to help him.

For the past few months the family has been working with I.C.E. officials to figure out how they could become citizens.

A meeting was scheduled for this past Monday.

However, a couple nights before, Jairo arrived home from a choir concert to find his mother and younger brother gone and a note which said they love him.

Jairo could have taken off as well, but at the urging of his friends, he chose to see if he could avoid being deported.

Classmates, community members and others all wrote letters on his behalf with the thought that it might help his cause.

Friday morning he was flown to Miami and later that evening back to El Salvador.

"We were hoping this wouldn't happen," said Jake Moravetz. "And we were hoping that we could prevent it from happening by doing all the legal things right and we just weren't fast about it I guess, or didn't catch it in time."

More information and a Facebook page has been setup in support of Jairo Yanes.

As for his brother and mother, I.C.E. agents said they are not in custody and have not been deported.
