Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in south Texas have rounded up 62 illegal immigrants who have committed or been convicted of additional crimes while in the U.S. illegally, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

Enrique Lucero, Field Office Director of the Enforcement and Removal Operations branch in San Antonio, says the individuals are facing various charges.

"Drunk driving, aggravated assault, sex offenses, 17 of them have been accepted for prosecution for re-entry after deportation," Lucero said.

One of the illegal immigrants is from Iraq. Officials say he is charged with stalking and violating a protective order, and has no connection to terrorism

Lucero says it is important to make sure that people who have no business being in this country illegally not victimize citizens and legal residents.

"These individuals were identified by various methods," he said. "One of the ways we identified them is through our tip line, people call in tips, and we take these leads seriously."

Lucero says one man has been arrested for assault with bodily injury to burglary of a habitation. Another was arrested for illegal re-entry, delivery of controlled substances, and criminal mischief.

All will be processed for deportation. Most are from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

Lucero says it's been a busy year for his ICE office, which is the busiest in the country.

"With the unaccompanied children, the families who were crossing over this summer in the Rio Grande Valley area come under the control of this office, so our work has been compounded much more so."

One man was charged with injury to a child. Many were charged with smuggling other illegal immigrants into the U.S.
