Although both agencies are part of the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is making it clear that it is not the same entity as Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which arrests illegal aliens.

USCIS will hold a public forum in Annandale Dec. 1 to address this and other issues of particular relevance to immigrants seeking citizenship, permanent residency, foreign adoption or immigrant sponsorship, or who are simply interested in other immigration-related issues.

According to Greg Christian, director of the federal agency's Fairfax office, many immigrants misguidedly mistrust USCIS and avoid processing their green cards and naturalization applications because they fear prosecution and deportation.
