Two men who face several felony charges following an alleged assault of another man at Valero gas station in Milford have attracted the attention of federal immigration officials.

Welton De Oliveira Godoy, 20, and Pablo Do Amaral, 25, former neighbors on Taylor Street, have been charged with assault to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and armed assault to murder, following a July 31 reported assault. Do Amaral also faces a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to court records.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued "detainers" for both men, said Timothy Connolly, a spokesman for the District Attorney's Office in Worcester.

This means that, should they be released from jail, ICE would have 48 hours to hold them pending action on immigration status, according to the immigration agency's website. A representative of ICE could not be reached Friday.

Until at least late September, both men are being held without bail on the felony charges they face. District Judge Robert Calagione on Aug. 11 found them to be dangers to the community, following a hearing, and ordered them held without bail.

Both men have entered pleas of not guilty to their charges, and are next scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 26 for a pretrial hearing.

The assault was reported about 9:30 p.m. July 31, by a man who said he was attacked by two other men who thrust a knife at him in the parking area of the gas station. The victim fled in to the convenience store to escape, hiding in the bathroom. He did not receive an injury that required medical attention.

Do Amaral was arrested by Milford police that night. De Oliveira Godoy was arrested two days later.

According to their attorneys' comments in court, both men deny bringing the knife, and dispute who brandished it.
