DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Federal immigration authorities have arrested 48 people in Iowa and Nebraska as part of a weeklong operation that led to the arrest of more than 2,900 illegal immigrants nationwide.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say the 7-day "Cross Check" enforcement operation was conducted last week. They say it was the largest enforcement operation of its kind. Everyone arrested had at least one criminal conviction and more than half were convicted of at least one felony, including attempted murder, rape and kidnapping. They will now face deportation.

ICE says 29 people were arrested in Iowa. Nineteen were arrested in Nebraska.

Arrests occurred in all 50 states and four U.S. territories.
