More than 2.5 million immigrants live illegally in Chicago, L.A., NYC
Pew report: More than 2.5 million immigrants live illegally in Chicago, L.A., NYC
February 10, 2017
A report released Thursday estimates more than 2.5 million immigrants in the country illegally live in the metropolitan areas of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, which have pledged to fight President Trump's plans to expand deportations.
The study by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center provides a glimpse of where immigrants in the country illegally reside and regions that could be most affected by Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.
It also underscores the challenges Trump could face in rounding up large numbers of deportees because many areas that are home to large numbers of immigrants lacking legal papers oppose his plans.
Any actions by the new administration could also be widely felt among immigrant communities in regions such as Phoenix, Houston, Dallas and Denver. In these areas, 37 percent of immigrants lack legal status, compared to 26 percent nationwide, the report said.
In Santa Ana, California, acting city manager Gerardo Mouet said fears of the Trump administration's plans extend far beyond the statistics, especially in Mexican immigrant communities where extended families are often close-knit and frequently made up of relatives who are legally in the country and others who are not.
"They're worried about uncle this, and cousin that," said Mouet, whose predominantly Latino city recently adopted a sanctuary law to try to dispel residents' fears and encourage cooperation with police. "If you understand Mexican immigrant families, of course that is the reality."
In Phoenix, immigrants are already starting to see tougher enforcement. A woman in the country illegally who was not targeted for deportation under the Obama administration was taken into custody Wednesday and sent back to Mexico, prompting protests at a local Immigration and Customs Enforcement office and seven arrests made by police.
The Pew report estimates there are 11.1 million immigrants in the country illegally — or 3.5 percent of the overall U.S. population.
In some areas, a larger share of immigrants lack legal papers than others, according to the report by the Washington-based center, which was based on 2014 Census Bureau data.
For example, about 17 percent of immigrants in the San Francisco area lack legal status compared with 35 percent in the region surrounding Las Vegas.
Cities and counties across the U.S. are immersed in a fierce debate over what role, if any, they should play in immigration enforcement as Trump seeks help from local law enforcement to boost deportations and threatens to cut off funding from so-called sanctuary jurisdictions that refuse to assist.
Many large cities including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago have pledged to resist and not cooperate with requests for assistance from federal deportation agents.
That could pose a challenge to the new administration's efforts to increase deportations, said Louis DeSipio, a professor of political science and Chicano/Latino studies at University of California, Irvine.
"If Trump wants numbers, rather than to solve a political problem, he needs to go to these places, because that is where the numbers are," he said.
About 61 percent of immigrants in the country illegally live in 20 metropolitan areas, the report said.
The Pew report looked at large metropolitan areas. Many of the local sanctuary policies cover specific cities within those regions.

You can't believe Pew who is still claiming there's only 11.1 million illegal aliens in the United States when there was 2 times or more than that number 12 years ago and they've been pouring in every year since. So there's 30 million at least.

Judy, I'm with you but think your number is too low.
Pew hasn't changed their total illegal alien count in more than 20 years which is a red flag........ they are clueless!
From what I see first hand in California, Las Vegas & Florida, I think the real number of illegal aliens would shock us!
I estimate closer to 75 million - 100 million.
Just in the county of Los Angeles alone it was 4.8 million Hispanics in 2010 data and would have to assume at
minimum 75% are illegal aliens, visa overstays.
You have to dig in and really analyze what we do know:
Major Sanctuary Cities:
Hillary Clinton CA total vote : 8,753,788
Hillary Clinton Los Angeles County Vote : 2,464,364
Hillary Clinton New York Votes : 4,556,124
Hillary Clinton Illinois Votes : 3,090,729
"" Florida : 4,617,886
Not all votes are illegal aliens but we have to assume a large percentage are.
Dig into number of Border Apprehensions which is only a very tiny percentage of total crossings.
And this is a short list where we can get more realistic illegal alien numbers.
11 million is ludicrous, 30 million is ludicrous.Last edited by lorrie; 02-11-2017 at 06:10 PM.

I'm with you lorrie. 11 years ago I did my own US Census research and came up with 50 million then including offspring. Everyone thought I was crazy and it scared people, so I stopped posting it. ( But I think I was right.) So your estimate would pattern mine if you add 1.5 to 2 million a year since then.
Did you know that 60% of students in our public schools receive free school lunch? To qualify for free school lunch you have to be at or near the poverty rate. How does that happen if our poverty rate is 15% or less? How does that happen if 1 child in 4 in America lives in poverty? See all the numbers are off, nothing about them aligns. The numbers all refute each other unless there is a huge illegal population that is counted in free school lunch figures but not in official poverty data.
I don't want to scare people, but Americans do need to be prepared for the hard reality that there are far more illegal aliens in the US than what the government has told US. They've deliberately lied for well over 15 years to conceal the real number, and the only reason it would do that is because that number is so large.
Trump knows. He's a numbers guy. He's got this, so we just need to support him and let him do what he said he would do which is "get them all out of here" and when asked by a reporter "how", he said "management".

Yeah, it's outrageous. I've known we've got a HUUUGE problem the first time I went to Walmart on a Friday afternoon 11 years ago and thought I was in Tijuana. I was just shocked by it. That was soon after the state had decided to issue illegal aliens drivers licenses.

I do believe that number in LA, match only illegals with DL,criminal checks, parents of anchor babies, simply people on tough with State of CA. How many of them are here illegally...? I do think, nobody really knows. I bet a lot of them have been working here, with no touch to anyone.....another coming after every single deportation again and again...and as we know, too many of overstay visas illegals, have been living here too for a long time.
Sad that our beautiful state CA is in packet with illegals and Mexico,so ICE isn't welcoming in SF, LA or Sacramento. I hope that get them all, who deserve be deported and arrested...
Good luck ICE !

Right On, Marci!! My heart breaks for California, I don't know they tolerate it. It's just craziness what's been going on out there. So many Californians tried so hard to stop this, Proposition 187, Save Our State, so many groups tried so hard, only to be defeated, the rug pulled out from under them by a federal judge. That's right, the disaster in California was perpetuated by a FEDERAL JUDGE.
Here is a brief summary of how ONE PERSON caused the travesty that is the illegal immigration problem in California:
Legal challenges
The constitutionality of Proposition 187 was challenged by several lawsuits. On November 11, 1994, three days after the bill's passage, Federal Judge W. Matthew Byrne issued a temporary restraining order against institution of the measure, which was filed by State Attorney General Dan Lungren.[18] After Judge Mariana Pfaelzer issued a permanent injunction of Proposition 187 in December 1994, blocking all provisions except those dealing with higher education and false documents, multiple cases were consolidated and brought before the federal court. In November 1997, Pfaelzer found the law to be unconstitutional on the basis that it infringed on the federal government's exclusive jurisdiction over matters relating to immigration.[19] Pfaelzer also explained that Proposition 187's effect on the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, the Congressional overhaul of the American welfare system, proved that the bill was a "scheme" to regulate immigration:
"California is powerless to enact its own legislative scheme to regulate immigration. It is likewise powerless to enact its own legislative scheme to regulate alien access to public benefits."[20]
Governor Wilson appealed the ruling, which brought the case to the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. But in 1999, the newly elected Democratic Governor Gray Davis had the case brought before mediation.[21] His administration withdrew the appeal before the courts in July 1999, effectively killing the law.[22]
California repealed the unenforceable sections of Proposition 187 in 2014.[23] In September 2014, California passed Bill SB 396 that removes passages from Prop. 187 from California's education, health and safety, and welfare codes, as a symbolic act after the repeal of Prop.187.[24]
All Proposition 187 tried to do was ban the use of public funds to underwrite illegal alien presence in California. A federal judge, named Mariana Pfaelzer, the first female to be appointed as a federal district judge in the United States, an appointment by Jimmy Carter, ruled the proposition unconstitutional. So, the massive illegal immigration problem you witness, experience, lose to and pay for in California is her judicial legacy.
Proposition 187 passed 59% to 41%, an overwhelming victory by the people of the state of California to protect its taxpayers and citizens from a foreign invasion of moochers and criminals, all squashed by 1 person who for some untold reason decided that Californians couldn't save themselves, they had to wait on the federal government to save them.A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan

That's funny, I know exactly how you felt.
I took my grandmother to a Super Center Walmart last year it was pretty scary.
We were the only 2 Caucasian in the entire store and everyone was staring at us and whispering among
themselves.
We felt like we in Tijuana also.
The following trip to Walmart I had planned to get there at 6:00 am to try and avoid any racial conflicts
and to my surprise.........
6:00 am on a Saturday morning, the store was packed with Caucasians. Did not see not 1 Mexican or Hispanic person.
By 10:00am it was time to get out there.

Same in Las Vegas. Uncomfortable to go get groceries. Shopping carts full of kids, speaking in Spanish, can't get through the isles. What a relief to have them all deported.
Cut off the medical, welfare, food stamps, school and ALL government programs now. Make them self deport.
Let Mexico set up Social Services programs for them!ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM
DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL
