ICE removes Brazilian national wanted for murder with help of Martha's Vineyard Police

BOSTON – A Brazilian national wanted for murder in Brazil was returned to his home country July 10 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) deportation officers with the assistance of the Oak Bluffs Police Department on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Dorviro Rocha-Ribeiro, 47, a citizen and national of Brazil who was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice for murder, was removed from the United States by officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) to Brazil via Boston Logan International Airport and Miami International Airport on July 10. He was immediately transferred to the custody of Brazilian law enforcement officers upon his arrival in his home country to face the pending murder charges.

Rocha-Ribeiro had earlier illegally re-entered the U.S. after ICE initially removed him in 2003. After being notified in May of this year by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, (ERO), Miami that Rocha-Ribeiro was the subject of an active warrant in Brazil for murder, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), Boston officers arrested him on May 9 at his place of employment in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, a township on the coastal island of Martha’s Vineyard in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

“Cases like this show how crucial the relationship between ERO and local law enforcement is in keeping communities safe”, said Rebecca J. Adducci, interim Field Office Director, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston. “The partnership with Oak Bluffs Police Department was vital in securing the removal of this criminal alien from the community.”

The removal of Rocha-Ribeiro represents only the latest case of nationwide removals of repeat-immigration violators who facing serious criminal charges in addition to federal immigration law violations.

ICE removed or returned 226,119 aliens in fiscal year 2017. The proportion of FY17 removals resulting from ICE arrests increased by nearly ten percent over the previous fiscal year, and the number of ICE interior removals in FY17 increased by over 15,000 from FY16.ICE is focused on removing public safety threats, such as convicted criminal aliens and gang members, as well as individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws, including those who illegally re-entered the country after being removed and immigration fugitives ordered removed by federal immigration judge.
