NAPLES —The 287(g) immigration enforcement policy between the federal government and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office will continue through the end of the year under a temporary extension.

Three days before it was set to expire, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement sent a modification to the agreement with the local agency on Friday afternoon.

The program, which allows for trained local deputies to enforce immigration laws, will be in effect until Dec. 31, 2012, according to the addendum.

ICE has yet to confirm whether more of the 62 agreements in place around the country — the majority of which were set to expire this weekend — will be renewed in addition to Collier’s.

As of the end of September, roughly 4,300 unauthorized immigrants in Collier County were processed for removal under the agreement.

Former Collier Sheriff Don Hunter signed the original agreement in 2007, and current Sheriff Kevin Rambosk signed a three-year renewal in October 2009.

That moves the decision until after the election instead of right before the election.
