As of Monday, no illegal immigrants can own or manage a store that sells beer, liquor, or wine.

The city commission passed the new ordinance with hopes the new law will prevent any problems from happening in the future.

Toccoa City Commissioner, Ferrell Morgan, tells NewsChannel 32, “This is just another safeguard. The liquor was voted in by the citizens and it’s up to the commission to keep the ordinance up to date. We want it to protect the rights of the citizens of the City of Toccoa.”

Some citizens in Toccoa agree.

Nick Patel, a liquor store owner, says, “No illegal immigrants, no way.”

He adds, “It's good as long as the people are legal aliens. It won't bother us as long as people have legal residency in the country.”

Now you can sell alcohol if you are a U.S. Citizen or a legal resident alien, like Drew Patel.

The new law does not affect him.

Drew says, “I’m legal and I’m paying taxes as far as the government needs. What else do you guys need because it's going to take me several years to get a citizenship.”

As far as the city commission goes, they say, “Provision is the cure for a lot of things.”

Their provision comes in the form of the new Alcohol and Beverage Ordinance.

The new law will not immediately affect anyone who already has a license to sell alcohol.

It will only go into effect when people renew their license.
