A 30-year-old Elgin man was sentenced to four years behind bars Thursday for sexually abusing a teenage boy numerous times over the course of a year.

Alejandro Velazquez pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child age 13 to 16 in a negotiated plea accepted by Kane County Judge Thomas E. Mueller. Twenty additional counts of the same felony charge were dismissed.

Velazquez, an illegal immigrant, was arrested last December after an investigation involving the Kane County Child Advocacy Center and Elgin police into claims he had sexual contact with the minor in cars, hotels and residences across Kane County.

The abuse ended when the boy, who lived in Elgin, was 16 years old, police said.

On Thursday, Velazquez was credited for 241 days served in the county jail since his arrest. By statute, he must serve at least half of the four-year sentence.
