BLOOMINGTON — A 44-year-old Bloomington man pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated criminal sexual abuse of two minors.

Kanakaraj Sheelam, of the 2000 block of Foxtail Road, was charged in July with abusing two minor girls with whom he is acquainted.

Under the plea agreement, additional charges of sexual abuse and indecent solicitation of a child were dismissed.

A June 21 sentencing is set.

In December, a jury convicted Sheelam’s co-defendant Shashikala Ramachandran, 37, of permitting the abuse of the victims.

She is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also has a issued a detainer that requires the federal agency to be notified before she is released from custody.
Both suspects remain in jail — Sheelam in lieu of posting $75,025 and Ramachandran in lieu of posting $15,025.
