Illinois has an estimated 450,000 illegal immigrants, according to a new study by the Pew Hispanic Center.

Illinois ranks eighth in the nation. California leads with as many as 2.8 million illegal immigrants, the study found.

The Illinois numbers have more than doubled since 1990, though growth is slowing, the report said.

Nationally, there were 11.9 illegal immigrants -- 6.3 million men, 4.1 million women and 1.5 million children under 18 -- as of March 2008. The number of illegal immigrants has increased about 25 percent since 2003, though growth has declined or been flat in the last couple of years, researchers said.

The study said illegal immigrants made up 5.4 percent of the U.S. work force.
