Illegal Alien Accused of Murdering Crew Mate on Nantucket Fishing Boat
Illegal Alien Accused of Murdering Crew Mate on Nantucket Fishing Boat
2
Newport New Police Department25 Sep 20184A Mexican national living in the U.S. illegally has been accused of murdering his crewmate Sunday while on a fishing boat off the coast of Massachusetts.
Authorities arrested Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez, 27, and charged him with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder for allegedly attacking three crew members, killing one and injuring two others, with a hammer and a knife, WCVB reported.
Vazquez was one of seven crew members aboard the Captain Billy Haver, a fishing vessel sailing 55 miles off Nantucket’s coast, and he ran towards one of his crewmates with a knife in one hand and a hammer in another, prosecutors say.
One of the victims said he fought off Vazquez’s attack when he noticed his fellow shipmate lying on the vessel’s deck in a pool of blood, the Daily Mail reported.
The illegal alien suspect allegedly attacked a third crew member before climbing up the ship’s mast in an attempt to escape from the vessel while crew members tried to catch him.
The Virginia-based vessel put out a distress call Sunday afternoon, alerting two ships in the area. German cruise ship Mein Schiff 6 was the first to respond, bringing two of the victims aboard the ship for medical treatment. The cruise ship’s doctor also pronounced the third victim dead.
A U.S. Coast Guard vessel was the second to respond, bringing law enforcement personnel aboard the fishing vessel to arrest Vazquez, WHDH reported.
The Coast Guard and the German cruise ship then accompanied the fishing vessel to the port of Boston, where Vazquez was placed in federal custody.
Court documents state that Vazquez had been living in the U.S. illegally and had a prior arrest in Newport News, Virginia, in March for abduction by force, intimidation, and deception.
Vazquez was then released on bond into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE then released Vazquez on April 23, records show.
If convicted, Vazquez faces a maximum penalty of up to life in prison and a $250,000 fine. If he is released from prison, he would likely be released to the custody of ICE and then deported.

Man arrested in Virginia, accused of multiple murders, is DACA recipient, source says
By Paulina Dedaj | Fox News
One dead after attack aboard fishing trawler
At least two fishermen were attacked aboard the boat while off the coast of Nantucket.
An illegal immigrant from Mexico, accused of killing one person and injuring two others aboard a fishing vessel over the weekend, was reportedly allowed to stay in the U.S. as a DACA recipient.
Fox News has exclusively learned that Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez, 27, was an illegal alien in the U.S. until he was granted deferred action under the DACA program on Nov. 30, 2013. The program is aimed at children brought to the country illegally by their parents.
Vazquez’s legal status was set to expire on Nov. 29, 2015. He applied for renewal but his request was denied on August 16, 2016 – almost a year after his DACA status had already expired. Documents say his request was denied for abandonment, meaning he may have failed to respond to an information request or never showed up for a required appearance.

While in the U.S., Vazquez was arrested in March, accused of abduction by force, intimidation or deception -- but he was released on $20,000 bond.
Similarly, Vazquez was released on bond following Sunday’s deadly attack - despite objections by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT CHARGED WITH MURDER AFTER KNIFE, HAMMER ATTACK ON FISHING VESSEL OFF MASSACHUSETTS
Prosecutors said in a charging document the fishing vessel, the Captain Billy Haver, was sailing some 55 miles off Nantucket with seven crew members aboard when Vazquez assaulted one crew member with a hammer in one hand and a knife in the other.
Two of the wounded crew members were taken aboard a nearby cruise ship that responded to the captain’s distress call, and one was pronounced dead by the ship’s doctor.
Vazquez was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. He is due back in court on Tuesday; he could face up to life in prison and $500,000 in fines if convicted. He also will be subject to deportation after serving any potential sentence.

BOSTON (AP) -- The fisherman charged with killing one crew mate and injuring another on board a commercial fishing vessel off the Massachusetts coast has been held without bail.
Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez made his initial appearance in federal court on Wednesday in Boston where he is charged with murder and attempted murder.
Authorities say Vazquez, a Mexican national living in the U.S. illegally, used a hammer and a knife to attack his shipmates Sunday on the Virginia-based vessel Captain Billy Haver about 55 miles off the coast of Nantucket.
Vazquez is also facing several charges in Newport News, Virginia, for an alleged abduction in March.
Vazquez's federal public defender requested a probable cause hearing, which was tentatively scheduled for next week, but had no comment outside the courtroom.

Virginia parents say Mexican murder suspect had married their daughter for citizenship
By Paulina Dedaj
| Fox News
VIDEO AT LINK.
Virginia parents claim that a Mexican national, who has been accused of murder, married their daughter for citizenship.
A Virginia couple says a Mexican national, who is accused of murdering one person and injuring two others aboard a fishing vessel last month, had married their daughter last year in a covert attempt to secure citizenship in the U.S. after his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status had expired.
Shelby and Lindsay McDannold told Fox News that their 20-year-old daughter met Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez in May 2017 through mutual friends, and the couple got married sometime the following month. However, Vazquez never managed to secure U.S. citizenship.
Shelby McDannold said he was concerned about his daughter's brief relationship with the man, and he questioned Vazquez’s immigration status at the time.
“I asked her, 'Is this guy even legal?'” he said.
He added that his daughter told him Vazquez, 27, was a U.S. citizen.
It was not clear to the McDannolds when their daughter learned about Vazquez’s immigration status, although they said it was after she already married him. (Shelby and Lindsay McDannold)
Lindsay McDannold, the woman’s mother, said their suspicions were heightened when in the fall of 2017, Vazquez tried to open a painting business in their daughter’s name.
According to the parents, this is when they learned from their daughter that Vazquez was not in the U.S. legally and allegedly had received a marriage license using an expired Social Security number. It was not clear to them when their daughter learned about Vazquez’s immigration status, although they said it was after she already married him.
Shelby McDannold also said he and his wife were fully aware of Vazquez’s DACA status only after reading reports last month.
The parents said the relationship between their daughter and Vazquez was tumultuous. They called him a “monster” and said he'd made threats against her and her family more than once. They also said his violent tendencies were fueled by an opioid and heroin addiction.
A public defender representing Vazquez did not respond to Fox News’ request for comment.
Vazquez allegedly killed one crew member in a hammer-and-knife attack aboard the Captain Billy Haver, a fishing vessel that was sailing some 55 miles off Nantucket, on Sept. 23. A judge ordered him held without bail.
Shelby McDannold said his daughter had separated from Vazquez after the man's arrest this past March, in an altercation which started when she came home late from work but escalated, he said, after his daughter refused to give Vazquez her Social Security number to start the paperwork needed for his citizenship.

Vazquez was charged with abduction by force -- and was released on $20,000 bond in April, despite objections by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“ICE encountered Meave-Vazquez at the Newport News City Jail in Virginia through its Criminal Alien Program in March 2018 after he was arrested by the Newport News Police Department on forcible abduction charges, which are still pending,” a statement from the agency read. “He entered ICE custody upon release from the local jail. Despite ICE’s objections, an immigration judge granted Meave-Vazquez bond.”
The Justice Department's Executive Office for Immigration Review confirmed to Fox News that Judge Roxanne C. Hladylowycz presided over the bond proceeding. The office did not elaborate on Hladylowycz's ruling, saying judges' "decisions speak for themselves."
Vazquez previously was arrested on Nov. 13, 2015, just weeks before his DACA status was set to expire, on multiple drug felony charges.
Fox News reported last month that Vazquez was an illegal alien in the U.S. until he was granted deferred action under the DACA program on Nov. 30, 2013. It expired 2 years later and his request for renewal was denied. He remained in the U.S. despite multiple run-ins with the law.
“If the system had worked, I wouldn’t be dealing with this because my daughter would’ve never met him and someone would still be alive today,” Lindsay McDannold said.
The McDannolds said the money Vazquez would have made on last month’s fishing trip was intended to pay for his divorce from their daughter.
With Vazquez in custody, they say they feel reassured for their daughter’s safety, but they realize the problem remains.
“The government is more concerned with protecting illegal immigrants than it is about protecting its own citizens,” Lindsay said.
