Illegal Alien Bust Near Idaho-Oregon Border

Illegal Immigration Bust Near Idaho-Oregon Border

    March 7, 2007 10:55 AM EST

Idaho-Oregon Border -- An illegal immigration bust happened near the Idaho-Oregon border Tuesday morning.

Just before 10:30 a.m., Idaho State Police officers stopped a van at milepost 12 on Highway 95.

Inside the van, they found 18 illegal immigrants.

"We were on a criminal interdiction out here on U.S. Highway 95. Earlier this afternoon, one of our officers stopped a vehicle that had some illegal aliens in the vehicle that were apparently being transported to the Idaho area," said Lt. Kevin Hudgens with Idaho State Police.

Sixteen of the occupants told officers they paid $1,000 each for the driver and his partner, also believed to be illegal immigrants, to smuggle them into the U.S. to work in the Caldwell area.

When Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents started to arrest the driver, he and his partner took off. And as ISP officer, Cpl. Craig Boll, chased the two, he stumbled and fell, breaking his ankle and leg.

He underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon at West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell.

The driver and his partner were eventually caught.

All of the illegal immigrants are now being held in Owhyee County on federal immigration charges.

Public safety: Van of Mexican citizens was stopped by state police Tuesday

By Kendel Murrant - Idaho Press-Tribune

TREASURE VALLEY — Information varied concerning the whereabouts of the 18 illegal aliens arrested Tuesday. Officials from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were unable to specifically name where they were being held or what phase of the deportation process they were in.
Sixteen illegal aliens, along with a driver and his partner, were traveling in a van along US 95 near the Idaho/Oregon border in Owyhee County Tuesday when Idaho State Police troopers pulled over the vehicle. When the status of the aliens was discovered, ISP detained them and turned them over to ICE officials. The driver and his partner attempted to flee, but were successfully detained by troopers.

ICE spokesman Carl Rusnok of Dallas, Texas, said the aliens might now be in a holding facility in Denver, Colo., though he could not say for certain.

Rusnok also said the U.S. Attorney General’s Office had decided to prosecute the driver of the van carrying the illegals.
“It’s not uncommon to pursue charges against the (driver of the) smuggling vehicle,” Rusnok said.

He added that the rest of the group was “being processed for removal back to Mexico,” though varying factors would determine how long it would be before the group would leave the US.

Meanwhile, the injured ISP trooper, Craig Boll, continued to recover from injuries he suffered during Tuesday’s arrest. Boll tripped while chasing the driver of the van and his partner down a steep, rocky embankment, breaking his ankle in two places and his fibula, a bone in the lower leg.
Boll was taken to West Valley Medical Center where ISP spokesman Rick Ohnsman said he had surgery to fix his broken bones.
