SALEM, N.H. — An illegal immigrant from Dorchester, Mass., has been charged with fraud for providing false documents while trying to obtain a driver's license, police said.

Albert Michel Nova Avalon, 30, was arrested Thursday by New Hampshire State Police after attempting to get a license at the state Division of Motor Vehicles office in Salem.

Avalon, originally from the Dominican Republic, was arrested at the office shortly after 2 p.m. after an employee contacted authorities. He was living in the country illegally, state police said.

Avalon presented documents that claimed he was 28-year-old Jose M. Vega Figueroa of Manchester. Salem police and representatives from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement participated in the investigation.

He refused bail and was held at the county jail pending his arraignment Friday in 10th Circuit Court.

Anyone with more information on this case is asked to contact state Trooper Richard Dupont at 223-8778.
