ILLEGAL ALIEN FREE ON BOND ALLEGEDLY MURDERS STORE CLERK
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT FREE ON BOND ALLEGEDLY MURDERS STORE CLERK
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office
by WARNER TODD HUSTON23 Jan 2015Mesa, AZ51
An illegal immigrant—who video surveillance reportedly shows calmly murdering a young store clerk in order to steal a box of cigarettes—was already out on bond from U.S. Immigration services and even had a previous conviction from which he had received no jail time.
Police captured Apolinar Altamirano, 29, late last week in West Valley after a brief chase with Mesa police and Arizona Department of Public Safety officers, local Mesa’s CBS affiliate reported on January 22.
Altamirano was being sought for the murder of Grant Ronnebeck, 21, a clerk at a local convenience store. Police arrested the illegal immigrant after seeing surveillance video that reportedly showed Altamirano shooting the clerk then calmly stepping behind the store counter and grabbing several packs of cigarettes before leaving the store.
This isn’t the first time the illegal immigrant has been in trouble with police.
KPHO reported that Altamirano “had been cited for trespassing at the same store Jan. 9 and was served with an injunction for harassment Jan. 19.”
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said that before the murder, Altamirano was already out on bond while U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were attempting to determine whether he should be deported.
Altamirano also has a past conviction on his record. In 2012, Altamirano was convicted on a charge of burglary but had been released on probation with no jail time.
The victim’s employer released a statement on Thursday. As you are aware, law enforcement is still conducting their investigation. QuikTrip is absolutely devastated and heart broken by this tragic loss. Our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers are with our employee’s family.
A Maricopa County Superior Court judge set bail at $1 million for the accused murderer. The suspect was being held, awaiting this next appearance in court scheduled for January 29.

Yes. Clerk's killer should have been deported

The man accused of killing young Grant Ronnebeck at a QT store should not have been in the United States. We all know it, no matter where you stand on immigration or border security or national politics. Although some people won't admit it.
But we have to be honest. If we couldn't deport that guy, who can we deport?
Apolinar Altamirano, the suspect in Ronnebeck's murder, was in the country illegally.
Federal immigration authorities say they began deportation proceedings against Altamirano two years ago, after he'd been convicted of burglary. But since it was a non-violent first offence (and those types of felons are not often sent to prison, no matter what the criminal's nationality), Altamirano managed to come up with the $10,000 bond and he was released.
Why was he released?
Essentially, because immigration courts are so backed up that even cases involving felony convictions can take years to litigate. And in the meantime some defendants, like Altamirano, make bond. (And $10,000 is not considered to be a small amount.)
Still, he shouldn't have been here.
There has to be a better way to deport criminals. It's not a lot to ask. It must be something that everyone on every side of the immigration debate can agree upon.
Suspected border crossers who are convicted of felonies should come before an immigration court immediately after that conviction and, if proven to be here illegally, shipped out of the country.
We should be able to do that quickly and efficiently. Although, honestly, is anything done by the government quick or efficient? And even if we did manage the change, would doing such a thing solve the immigration crisis?
No.
Will it prevent convenient store clerks like Ronnebeck from being killed?
No.
But it might have prevented Ronnebeck from being killed.
We can't deny that.
We shouldn't try to deny that. It would be an insult to the 21-year-old and to his grieving family and friends.
There is no simple way to fix our broken borders or our broken immigration system. And there is no fix for Ronnebeck or his loved ones.
But Ronnebeck wasn't the first person to die because of this ridiculous situation. Maybe if we'd fixed this aspect of the justice/immigration system earlier he would still be alive.
If we don't we'll be having this same discussion again. Soon.
And how do we explain that to the next victim's family?.

Well, US immigration law doesn't distinguish between first offenders, second offenders, no offenders, or any other additional felonious crime. US immigration law states quite simply that if you are in the US illegally, then you are to be deported. This new element of deporting more serious criminals who are caught committing other crimes is one of those "discretionary" powers the stupid Congress perhaps unwittingly gave to the Executive Branch. This must end. Any USCIS, DHS or BP agency who fails to deport an illegal alien within 30 days should be subject to budget cuts and a dismantlement of their ineffective organizations. Why should Americans pay for a job that doesn't get done, but instead is filled with betrayal, schemes, plots and usurpation of our laws that jeopardize and harm US citizens, impoverish our workers and bankrupt our government?
If you are in our country in violation of US immigration law, then you must be deported, the easy way on your own or the hard way with an arrest and a prompt deportation order. Period.A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan
