PROVIDENCE, R.I.

Two Rhode Island Democratic lawmakers are proposing a bill that would grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrant students if they meet residency requirements.

Sen. Juan M. Pichardo and Rep. Grace Diaz, both Democrats from Providence, plan to discuss their proposals at a news conference Tuesday. They have introduced similar legislation several times previously but failed.

Under their proposal, children who graduate from attend Rhode Island high schools after attending for at least three years would qualify for in-state college tuition, regardless of their immigration status.

They also would have to file to legalize their immigration status or agree to file as soon as they are eligible.
