MAYS LANDING, NJ — A 24-year-old man, living in the country illegally since 1998, has been arrested and charged with identity theft and insurance fraud, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jeffrey S. Blitz said Thursday.

Jorge Ayala Cuadros of Pleasantville is being held in the Atlantic County jail on $50,000 cash bail.

Cuadros was arrested after a one-month cooperative investigation by Atlantic County Prosecutor's Insurance Fraud Task Force Investigator Jason Dorn and federal agents from the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General.

It is alleged that Cuadros used the identity of Miguel Alba Jr. for the purpose of securing a Social Security card and employment at a bus company in Pomona. Cuadros obtained this identity when he crossed the border from Mexico in 1998, Blitz said.

The prosecutor said Cuadros applied for multiple insurance policies, including auto and a life insurance policy through his work, using the name Miguel Alba Jr.

Information about the alleged identity theft came to light when the real Miguel Alba Jr., a resident of Texas, applied for a new job and learned that someone in Pleasantville was using his identity. Alba reported the information to the Social Security Administration in Texas, which contacted the Atlantic County Social Security Office early in December.

Agents from the Social Security Administration contacted the Prosecutor's Insurance Fraud Task Force and the investigation began.

Investigators from the Prosecutor's Insurance Fraud Task Force, agents from the Social Security Administration and members of the Galloway Township Police Department arrested Cuadros without incident at his place on employment Wednesday morning.

If convicted of both theft and insurance fraud, Cuadros could face five to 10 years in prison on each charge.
