Wearing a T-shirt that read "Stop illegal immigration" in bold letters, Augusta resident Jim Stach walked along Laurens Street Tuesday evening, shouting to pedestrians, "Lindsey Graham is a traitor."

One of several protestors, Stach stood across the street from the Aiken Center for the Arts where Sen. Graham attended a reception attended by many of his supporters in his bid for 2008 re-election. Those outside the Arts Center, however, were not in support of Graham, primarily because of the senator's support of a controversial immigration reform bill, which was defeated in Congress.

"Our reason for being here is to protest Lindsey Graham's support for amnesty for 'criminal invaders,'" said Aiken resident James Layden, former chairman of The League of the South.

"They (immigrants) are not illegal aliens; they are invaders because they illegally come into our country in large numbers," he said.

Layden was one of several representatives of the League rallying against Graham on Tuesday evening.

He said the group makes a point to be present at all of Graham's public appearances to express its opposition to Graham's policies.

"He has sold out the country for his own personal gains," Layden said. "We want Lindsey Graham to know that we are dedicated to his demise politically. If we have our way, he won't be senator in the next election."

Jim Hanks, the group's current chair, agreed.

"We'll follow him around just as we did (David) Beasley until he is out of politics completely."

Hanks, a Lexington resident, said the group was in Columbia on Monday protesting Graham as the senator spoke at a law firm.

"He was elected on false pretenses," Hanks said of Graham. "Lindsey Graham claims to represent South Carolina, but he actually represents Mexico."

Stach, who describes himself as a patriot, works with Freedom Fighter Radio, a website that aims to defend American sovereignty. Stach said that when he calls Graham a traitor, he is referring to Graham's support of legislation that Stach says is destroying our country's freedom.

"The destruction of our country will not come from outside forces; it will come from inside."

Protesters were restricted to picketing across the street from the Center. About six Aiken Public Safety officers patrolled the area to deter any potential violence that could erupt. The group filed for a picketing permit, which was approved by Aiken Public Safety.

"The First Amendment guarantees free speech and the right to assemble, and that's what they are doing," said Capt. Wendell Hall with Aiken Public Safety. "Our job here is to see that it goes smoothly," he said.

Representatives for Sen. Lindsey Graham did not wish to comment for this article.
