Illegal aliens turn themselves in to the border patrol expecting quick release

More illegal immigrants caught, expecting quick release, Border Patrol union says

McALLEN — Illegal immigrants have started surrendering to local Border Patrol agents after crossing the Rio Grande, convinced they’ll be released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which recently turned hundreds of immigrants loose to save money.

In preparation for the sequester — federal spending cuts forced by Congress’ inability to reach a budget deal — ICE released several hundred low-risk illegal immigrants from detention centers last month and placed them on supervised released instead. The news apparently reached illegal immigrants preparing to cross the border.

“These are people that are just voluntarily turning themselves in to our agents with the expectation they’ll be released,” said Border Patrol Agent Paul Perez, president of the Rio Grande Valley union of the National Border Patrol Council. “When you cross with the expectation that you’ll be released, there’s no need to hide, there’s no need to run. You just look for a uniformed agent and turn yourself in.”

ICE stopped releasing immigrants after the cost-cutting move sparked public outcry.

A spokesman for the Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector said he couldn’t immediately comment on the union’s concerns or provide apprehension numbers.

Border Patrol agents across the Rio Grande Valley Sector, many working near McAllen, have reported apprehending more illegal immigrants than normal during the weekend, Perez said.

Neither Perez nor local rank-and-file agents knew how many illegal immigrants voluntarily surrendered with the expectation ICE would release them. Internal Border Patrol numbers obtained by The Monitor show weekend apprehensions steadily climbed during February.

A Border Patrol agent sent The Monitor photos taken recently at the McAllen Station, which show dozens of immigrants crowded into overflow areas.

Border Patrol sees spike in illegal immigration amid sequestration rumors

Border Patrol figures obtained by Action 4 News show a sharp increase in illegal immigrant apprehensions over the past week.

The U.S. Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley Sector tells Action 4 News they have seen a spike in illegal immigrants crossing the border and surrendering themselves.

When brought in for questioning, detainees told agents that people in their home countries are reporting that Border Patrol agents will not detain them due to budget cuts in the federal government's sequester that went into effect March 1st.

RGV SectorSspokesman Henry Mendiola Jr. said they will continue to detain anyone who crosses the border illegally.

"As long as the Border Patrol is out there, we are going to continue to make arrests, we are going to continue to detain, and we will continue to hand folks over for removal operations and for removal from the country,” Mendiola said.

Mendiola said they are fully staffed and have not made any changes or received any notice to begin making changes.

Border Patrol agents will continue to patrol on the ground 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year.

Number of Illegals Caught in Texas Spikes – With Many Expecting Immediate Release by ICE

By John Hill on March 8, 2013

Above: Filled to the rim. Illegal aliens sitting in the kitchen of
the McAllen, TX Border Patrol Station, as standard holding
areas were too full to accommodate the massive increase
    in apprehended border crossers.

It sure didn’t take long for word of the outrageous release of nearly 3,000 criminal illegal aliens by ICE over the past few weeks to trickle back to Mexico.

The number of illegals apprehended by Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley in February was up nearly 70% from the month before. And hundreds of them were even turning themselves in, expecting that ICE would simply let them go too!

All in all, the number are staggering. In December, agents at the McAllen Station alone arrested 2,758 people, according to data released by Customs and Border Protection. The number held steady during January, when agents arrested 2,815 people.

In February, though — the month ICE began releasing illegal immigrants to save money — agents arrested 4,777 people – a nearly 70% increase over the prior month. This spike coincided with the thousands of illegals released from ICE facilities by DHS – with the cover story that the release was to to “looming sequester cuts”. Of course we know now that the detainees were released starting in the first week of February, a full month before sequestration was even scheduled to take effect.

Illegal aliens got the message – and fast. And now they are streaming across the border at levels not seen in years. This is the the result of Obama’s myriad amnesty decrees.

In the Rio Grande Valley Sector, agents typically work 10-hour shifts. To “save money”, they will start working eight-hour shifts starting next month, a source said.

Additionally, 60,000 Border Patrol agents will face 14 furlough days — essentially unpaid vacation. Overtime would drop severely. At the very time that border crossing have nearly doubled, Obama is thinning out our border security to the bone.

“The coyotes and those folks listen to what’s happening here,” said U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo. “They’re probably getting the impression, ‘Hey, there are going to be less people working. There will be less security.’”

And there is absolutely no reason for it. DHS and the White House claim the cuts will occur because of “sequestraion”. But this is a bald faced lie.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) budget projects that at the end of fiscal year 2013, DHS will carry forward more than $9 billion in “unobligated balances” – unspent money!

So our border less secure, criminal aliens set loose onto our streets, the American people put at greater risk. And all because of a outright lie to score political points, despite the DHS having billions in surplus funds available.

    How is this not treason?

Influx of Illegal Aliens Arrested At Border Expect “Quick Release”

    March 13, 2013
    Judicial Watch

Word of the Obama administration releasing “waves” of illegal immigrants from detention centers around the U.S. spread throughout Mexico, leading to an influx of migrants turning themselves in to Border Patrol with the expectation that they too would be let go.

The illegal border crossers are surrendering in large numbers after a treacherous journey across the Rio Grande because they’re convinced federal authorities will release them, according to a seasoned Border Patrol agent quoted in a Texas newspaper. In the days following the administration’s controversial release program, many of the illegal immigrants detained by Border Patrol at the McAllen crossing station in Texas inquired about being let go, according to an agency spokesman quoted in the story.

Evidently, the Mexican border crossers heard that the Obama administration was freeing detainees and they expected similar treatment. “These are people that are just voluntarily turning themselves in to our agents with the expectation they’ll be released,” said a veteran agent, Paul Perez, who is president McAllen’s local Border Patrol union. “When you cross with the expectation that you’ll be released, there’s no need to hide, there’s no need to run. You just look for a uniformed agent and turn yourself in.”

In February, the month Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began releasing illegal aliens from detention centers around the U.S., the number of migrants arrested along the southern border skyrocketed to nearly 5,000, according to agency data. Homeland Security officials refuse to speculate on what caused the spike, but it’s pretty obvious that Obama’s release program had something to do with it.

The president blamed impending budget cuts to justify freeing “waves” of illegal immigrants from facilities in Texas, Florida and Louisiana. In a statement to the media, ICE offered the following explanation: “In order to make the best use of our limited detention resources in the current fiscal climate and to manage our detention population under current congressionally mandated levels, ICE has directed field offices to review the detained population to ensure it is in line with available funding. As a result of this review, a number of detained aliens have been released around the country and placed on an appropriate, more cost-effective form of supervised release.”

Once the secret liberation initiative hit the news, the word clearly spread like wildfire south of the border. In fact, the world’s largest Spanish-language network—extremely popular throughout Latin America— interviewed one of the freed illegal immigrants, a man named Manuel who expressed shock that he was let go from Polk Detention Center in Texas. In the segment Manuel admits that many of the “muchachos” (young men) released from his facility have criminal records and all were in disbelief that they were let go.

Here is an example of the dangers, besides the obvious national security implications, of a porous border or an initiative that encourages even more illegal immigration. An illegal alien recently brought into the U.S. a deadly, drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis from Mexico. It happened in the same Texas region that’s seen a spike of illegal border crossers since the Obama administration began freeing undocumented immigrants from jail.

Be informed that the DHS is no longer releasing the Border Patrol monthly individual border sector apprehension numbers, i.e.:
