MANTECA — Charges were brought against an auto theft suspect who was shot in the hand by police after he allegedly tried to run over an officer during a chase Tuesday morning.

Manteca police said Wednesday that Jose Luis Ayala, 20, of Modesto was released from ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton late Tuesday evening and charged with assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, vehicle theft, felony evasion and carjacking.

He was booked into San Joaquin County Jail later that evening.

Initial investigations had led police to believe Ayala was from the Bay Area, said Rex Osborn, a Manteca police spokesman.

Most of the information we found on his person indicated he was from the Bay Area, plus he was headed to the Bay Area, Osborn said.

Police tracked down Ayalas parents in Modesto on Tuesday night.

Investigations by police and the San Joaquin County Districts Attorneys Office found Ayala also is an illegal immigrant, according to a police news release. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will interview Ayala about his legal status in the United States, Osborn said.

About 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, a Manteca resident on the 1400 block of Sextent Way called police after his car alarm went off. After a series of bungled auto theft attempts in the southwest area neighborhood, Ayala allegedly returned to a stolen car on Compass Lane.

After police attempted to taser Ayala and shot him in the hand, Ayala led police and later the California Highway

Patrol on a chase over the Altamont Pass that finally ended in Pleasanton when officers placed a spike strip near the Interstate 580 and Interstate 680 interchange. Ayala reached speeds of up to 130 mph in the pursuit, prompting Manteca police to back off to ensure public safety, Osborn said.

On Wednesday, police also released the name of the officer who shot Ayala during the heist. Officer Robert Anderson has been placed on paid administrative leave for three days, as required by the department policy, Osborn said. Before joining Manteca police, Anderson was a deputy with the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office and in Broward County, Fla.

Hes expected to return to work next week.

Ayala is being held in lieu of $560,124.99 bail at the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp. He is set to appear in court at 1:15 p.m. today at the Manteca branch of San Joaquin Superior Court.

This is just another illegal alien with total disrespect for American's and their safety. Luckly, local citizens were spared from what could have been a major accident taking the lives of more innocent families.

He'll get off. He'll probably hire a lawyer from the Amexican Criminal Liberties Union to handle his case. He did nothing wrong. After all, he's just here trying to find work...to be harassed in this fashion is unacceptable. He's the future of our country, today.
