Last month, police in Lawrenceville, GA, arrested Lucio Gomez-Gonzalez, 20, and charged him with the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl.

A day earlier, police arrested the girl’s mother, Rosa Benavides-Arellano, 42, and charged her with being a party to statutory rape.

Gomez-Gonzalez was actually living with the girl and her mother.

According to the police report, the woman allowed Gomez-Gonzales to move in with them because she did not want him to be risk arrest for having sex with her underage daughter.

The two were arrested after a case worker with the Division of Family and Children Services met Benavides-Arrellano after someone from Richards Middle School discovered the 14-year-old was pregnant.

The age of sexual consent in Georgia is 16.

Capt. Greg Vaughn, spokesman for the Lawrenceville Police Department told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “At 14 years old, it doesn’t matter if her parents give consent. That’s the law.â€
