Father killed, 8 injured in series of wrecks on I-277

A man taking his sons to a swim meet in Charlotte died and eight others were injured in a series of crashes on Interstate 277 Saturday morning that began after a police officer stopped to help a disabled car.

Officer Jeff Templeton responded around 7:20 a.m. to a report of a disabled vehicle on the outer loop of I-277 near Carson Boulevard. The disabled Chevy Impala was on the left side of the roadway in the breakdown lane, out of the travel lanes.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Templeton was out of his car, helping the stranded driver and two passengers, when a Toyota Camry crashed into the back of his patrol car.

    Templeton was not injured.

Shortly after the crash, an off-duty officer, Chris Kunz, stopped to help. He parked his personal vehicle and got out.

Police said the Camry's driver, William Alan Sweezer, 53, of Fort Mill, S.C., also got out of his car and was standing in the road talking to the officers when a Toyota 4Runner slammed into the back of his car.

Sweezer was struck and killed. Officers Templeton and Kunz also were hit.

Kunz's unoccupied vehicle was then struck by a taxicab traveling along I-277.

Police charged Delvin Joel Marin-Contreras, the 29-year-old driver of the 4Runner that authorities said hit and killed Sweezer, with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving without a license.

Court records show Marin-Contreras of Charlotte had been previously charged with driving without a license in Mecklenburg County, once in 2008 and again in 2010.

He was being held late Saturday under $10,300 bond in Mecklenburg County jail. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials also were investigating his immigration status.

A section of the interstate was closed Saturday morning, and paramedics transported eight people to area hospitals: the two officers, three passengers from Sweezer's car and the three occupants of the disabled Impala.

Officers Templeton and Kunz were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

Sweezer, who was driving his wife and two teenage sons, Brandon and David, to a swim meet, was active in the S.C. swimming community. He was treasurer of S.C. Swimming, a group that is part of the larger USA Swimming organization.

Brandon and David Sweezer swim with Rock Hill Area YMCA Aquatics and were set to compete at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in uptown Saturday, said their coach, Lynn Williams.

Williams said Sweezer's wife, Bobette, and one of the boys were injured in the wreck and would be hospitalized overnight for observation. The other boy was unhurt, she said.

She said the Sweezer family moved to the area from California about five years ago. Sweezer often trained other swimming volunteers, she said, and he was at the pool to watch his sons swim practically every day.

"Our swim family is absolutely, totally devastated," she said. "He will be missed not just for what he did for us as a volunteer, but for the support he gave the team."

N.C. law requires that drivers traveling on roadways with multiple lanes move into another lane when emergency vehicles are parked along the road with their lights on. If there is only one lane in each direction, drivers are required to slow down as they pass emergency vehicles.

Police ask that anyone with information about this incident to call 704-432-2169.

That's exactly right marquis! Illegal invaders are allowed as many bites at the apple as they like. When they finally kill an American citizen, then our government decides to deport them after they receive their slap on wrist.

It's happening all over this country and nobody seemingly cares to do anything about it. I guess American citizens are nothing but cannon fodder in our government's eyes, while they remain ever determined not to enforce our immigration laws and deport illegal invading criminals when they have the chance.

More victims of greed, cheap labor, corrupt politicians, scumbag advocacy groups, and a pathetic portion of the public that turns a blind eye for the sake of a well manicured lawn and a cheap bottle of wine.

This man lost his life, his wife, her husband, his children, their father, all due to a person that was NOT supposed to be here!

According to the state, this man's life is worth $10,300.00 in bond.

According to my personal estimation concerning values, many politicians are not worth Didley's squat!

The governments, politicians, and business interests, all need to stand up tell the American people just how many American lives their cheap labor is worth. Stand up! Be men about! Quit acting like mice and rodents!

Americans need to stand up and refuse to be complicit through their silence with such worms and maggots!

Again, You can thank the Elitist Politicians for supporting the ILLEGALS. Drugs furnished by the ILLEGALS, Drug Wars by the ILLEGALS, United States Citizens murdered by the ILLEGALS but not to worry the Sanctuary State will continue to furnish Cheap ILLEGAL Labor for the Elitist Political Contributors and Special Interest Groups of course they feel safe in their Gated Communities. If you venture out and you are murdered by an ILLEGAL Drunk Driver or you are a Police Officer murdered by an ILLEGAL during the commission of a crime or a traffic stop or a United States Citizen is in the "wrong" place (any Sanctuary City or State) and caught in the cross fire just remember Our Elitist Politicians and their Elitist Political Contributors consider those murdered as a SMALL SACRIFICE for THEIR CHEAP LABOR/potential votes.

Investigators: Driver in deadly accident in country illegally

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Investigators say a driver charged with hitting and killing a man over the weekend appears to be in the country illegally in addition to not having a driver's license.

Investigators say Delvin Joel Marin-Contreras hit and killed swim team volunteer Bill Sweezer Saturday on the Interstate 277 loop at Carson Boulevard.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office says after the crash and Contreras' arrest, they asked him where he s from. The answer? Honduras.

Deputies checked Contreras' name and found no paper trail showing he is in the country legally.

Court records show Contreras has prior citations for driving without a license. But in those instances jail officials say Contreras wasn't arrested. He paid the ticket and the sheriff's office didn't check his immigration status.

Now, the misdemeanor death by vehicle and driving without a license charges stemming from the crash take priority over his immigration status.

He could be deported, but that would be after any potential sentence if convicted.

Police say Contreras hit and killed Sweezer after Sweezer struck a police car. That police car stopped to help a driver with car trouble that pulled into the left non-traffic trouble lane.

Sweezer was out of his car, talking to police about his own wreck when he was killed.

Family, friends and swimmers for the Rock Hill Rays swim team are mourning the sudden loss.

"He walked the walk, he talked the talked. He was always there for his kids," said friend Jack Maddan.

Police say it could be two weeks before they finish a detailed crash report, which could give better insight into how the collision happened.

Contreras appeared in court Monday via videoconference from the Mecklenburg County Jail. A judge gave him a court-appointed attorney and upheld a $10,000 bond.

Contreras is due in court again on April 28.
