Herald Staff Report

A man was arrested Saturday in connection with the assault of woman in her Montezuma County home near County Road 29.

The man, Alejandro Macharigiu, 30, was arrested around 5 p.m. after he was found in the crawl space of the victim's home. He is being held in the Montezuma County Detention Center on suspicion of several felony charges including burglary, felony menacing and first-degree assault.

Deputies responded to a call in which the homeowner was reported to possibly have been shot. At the scene, deputies determined the woman had been "seriously assaulted" while her husband was working in the yard, according to a news release issued by the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office on Sunday.

The woman was taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez, where it was determined that she had not been shot.

In addition, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency has placed a hold on Macharigiu, because he is suspected of entering the country illegally.

Deputies concluded Macharigiu entered the house with a rifle and assaulted the woman. The homeowners were able to escape, and they ran to a neighbor's house, where they placed an emergency call to authorities.

Illegal criminals are getting bolder. The judge should send a message by putting this germ away for a long time before deporting.
