Illegal immigrant arrests gain praise, criticism


NEW IPSWICH, N.H. (AP) - The New Hampshire police chiefs who have been arresting illegal immigrants on trespassing charges are winning praise and criticism.

A group called Citizens Against Illegal Aliens went to New Ipswich on Tuesday to give Chief Garrett Chamberlain a certificate of appreciation and a proclamation signed by about 400 people.

Chamberlain, and Hudson Chief Richard Gendron, have been using a state trespassing law to arrest illegal immigrants. The group says it also plans to give Gendron a proclamation.

Meanwhile, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson criticized the arrests. Richardson is visiting the state to rally support for Democrats, and possibly line up a run for president. He said arresting illegal immigrants is a job for federal agencies, but he said federal officials are failing to deal with the problem, forcing local authorities to act.
