An illegal immigrant using different names was charged with assault and intimidation of a victim after an incident at 16th and Alter streets Saturday night, police said. Hazleton police arrested 19-year-old Jose Ramos, who shared an apartment with the 19-year-old female victim in the 800 block of Alter Street in Hazleton.

Police answered a call to the address about a female being assaulted. They found the victim at a pay phone at the same address.

She told police she had been in an argument with Ramos and she said he was using multiple identifications and sometimes went by the name of Jose Perez.

The victim said he knocked her to the ground and kicked her in the stomach several times. She was treated at the scene by medical personnel from American Patient Transport Systems and eventually taken to Hazleton General Hospital by APTS.

Hazleton police said the victim came to the police station a short time later and asked if the charges against Ramos could be dropped. When she was told the charges could not be dropped in this case, she told police Ramos had forced her to come to the station and drop the charges and told her that if she didn’t, he was going to hurt her badly.

Later Saturday evening, just after 9, police were called to 16th and Alter streets after someone reported a woman was being assaulted in the street.

The victim told police Ramos found out the charges were not dropped and he began to threaten her. She fled the apartment and Ramos chased her, according to a witness who stopped to help the victim.

City police arrested Ramos a short time after he fled the scene. He was charged with simple assault and harassment for the prior incidents and attempting to intimidate a witness.

Ramos was also charged with two more counts of simple assault and false identification to law enforcement in the most recent incident.

While Ramos was in police custody, a subsequent investigation revealed he had two Pennsylvania identifications, one for Jose Perez Ojeda and another for Alexander Cruz-Luna, and both had different dates of birth.
Eventually, police learned his actual name is Jose Ramos Jiménez, that a detainer was issued by the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) and that he is an illegal immigrant.

Ramos-Jimenez is being held at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre on the charges from both incidents and a federal detainer.
