DALLAS — The state's homeland security chief told North Texas law enforcement leaders today that the state is playing catch-up from a longtime underinvestment in border security.

Steve McGraw offered the assessment in remarks to the North Texas Crime Commission in Dallas today.

He said that Texas sees all manner of disasters, other than earthquakes. But he says the most significant security threat is the state's porous border with Mexico.

The state is working to make border security more visible. He spoke of members of the National Guard, Civil Air Patrol, federal immigration agencies and other entities who are part of the security presence along the back roads and backcountry of the border.
