    Illegal immigrant to be deported

A Woonsocket, R.I., man arrested in Mendon this weekend on an immigration detainer warrant will be deported for being an illegal immigrant, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Luis Manuel Lala-Huellca, of 38 George St., could be sent back to his native Ecuador within days or weeks, said Mike Gilhooly, an ICE spokesman.

"He's in ICE custody and he'll remain in custody until he is removed from the United States," Gilhooly said. Lala-Huellca is in a facility where illegal immigrants are held but Gilhooly could not provide the location.

A judge originally ordered Lala-Huellca's deportation in 2003 but he became a fugitive, Gilhooly said.

"He's already had due process," Gilhooly said. "He had the opportunity to tell his side in immigration court."

When Lala-Huellca disappeared, a warrant was issued by ICE for his arrest.

"He's run once," Gilhooly said. "He's not going to get a second chance."

Mendon Police arrested his brother, Luis Rogelio Lala, on an unlicensed operation charge Friday.

At that time, police discovered the immigration detainer issued for Lala-Huellca, said Chief Ernest Horn.

Police told Lala that he should tell Lala-Huellca to turn himself in, which he did Saturday, Horn said.

"I give him a lot of credit for that," Horn said. "You don't see that a lot."

Immigration and Customs Enforcement will work with the Ecuadorean Consul on getting Lala-Huellca to Ecuador, Gilhooly said.
