Santos Cordero, 45, apologized and told the court he had a severe drinking problem when he stabbed the woman, 39, in the abdomen with a serrated knife in August.

Prosecutors said Cordero will have to serve 85 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for parole. Cordero could have been sentenced to up to 30 years in prison, prosecutors said.

After his prison term, he could be deported.
