Officer shot at point-blank range during routine traffic stop, taken to hospital as precaution.
An illegal immigrant who previously had been deported has been ordered held without bond for allegedly trying to kill a Phoenix police officer.

Thirty-five-year-old Jose Abel Cabrera is accused of shooting the officer after he'd been pulled over in northeast Phoenix for running a stop sign.


Police credit the 22-year-old rookie officer's bulletproof vest with saving his life. The officer, who was treated at a hospital and then released, returned the fire as man who shot him sped away in a pickup.

Cabrera was arrested seven hours later at his northwest Phoenix home. Police say he denied being involved, alleging he had lent his pickup -- which was found with two apparent bullet holes in the rear window -- to someone else.

Cabrera was booked for investigation of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and misconduct involving weapons.

Thank goodness that officer is ok.

If a citizen attempts to shoot a law enforcement officer the penalty is severe. Wonder how this illegal will be treated?

How will he be treated?

I'm sure he'll be given amnesty and authorization to sue the City of Phoenix because the police officer tried to shoot him in the back as he fled .. that is what 2 bullet holes in the back windshield would mean wouldn't it? Same as our two US Border Patrol Agents still rotting in solitary confinement for trying to do their jobs.

GRRRR!!

Lets hope the City of Phoenix has more sense and more loyalty to the American People than the US Justice Department under the Bush Administration.
