Thread: Illegal Immigrant Pleads Guilty To 3rd Reentry Offense

He has a long history of DUI charges too.

HARTFORD, CT — A Mexican citizen who illegally entered the U.S. twice before has now pleaded guilty to a third illegal entry offense.

Jose Del Carmen Hernandez, 41, lived in the United States between 1999 and 2009 and had multiple state convictions for assault, threatening and DUI. He was removed to Mexico in 2009. He returned to Connecticut and was convicted on charges of criminal mischief and evasion with injury.

He was arrested in Hartford in March 2013 by Hartford Police and was subsequently convicted of illegal reentry of a removed alien. He was sentenced to serve 12 months in federal prison and was deported in April 2014 again. To sign up for free Greater Hartford news alerts and more, click here.

Hernandez apparently thought the third time would be a charm and reentered the U.S. in 2015. He was arrested by Hartford Police in November 2015 and charged with DUI. He was charged and convicted of another illegal reentry offense and sentenced to serve 12 months and one day in federal prison. He also was sentenced to a year in state prison for the DUI charge.

He was deported again in May 2017 and reentered the U.S. again. Once again he was arrested by Hartford Police in January 2018 on a DUI charge. He faces up to 10 years in prison for illegal reentry and two years for violating his supervised release from his previous conviction. He is scheduled to be sentenced in October 2018.
