Bill targets illegal immigration, drunk driving

BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Sujapa, an undocumented immigrant from Honduras, pleaded with lawmakers Tuesday to reject a bill that targets illegal immigration.

“It’s dangerous for me to say, but the reality is that families come here because it’s a life or death situation at home. We risk dying if we stay and the alternative is to come here,” said Sujapa, who would only give her first name.

Senate bill 2061 / House bill 3913 penalizes landlords who rent to undocumented immigrants and the employers who hire them. It allows police to check their immigration status on drunk driving stops and bars them from paying the more affordable in-state college tuition fee.

The author of the bill, Senator Richard Moore, says the legislation merely aims to enhance community safety – Especially after the deaths of Matthew Denice and Richard Grossi, both from Milford, who were run over and killed in separate incidents by inebriated undocumented immigrants over the last three years

“We need to act sooner rather than later because people are dying because we’re not enforcing the law sufficiently and people aren’t observing the law as they should,” said Sen. Richard Moore (D-Uxbridge).

But immigrant advocates insist the bill mixes the issue of drunk driving up with immigration.

“State legislators are using this incident to target the immigrant community to propose broader anti-immigrant laws that can really you know create a lot more terror in our community,” said Brazilian Immigrant Center Executive Director Natalicia Tracy.

For now the bill sits in the Legislature’s judiciary committee. No word on whether the bill will be reported out of committee.

Our lawmakers shouldn't even be listening to non-citizens. Most of them seem to have forgotten that they represent us, not illegals.

Exactly! WE THE PEOPLE are in a life or death situation here! TWENTY MILLION of OUR people are out of work, every day people are losing their home, kids are going to bed hungry. And all the while illegals are collecting benefits they have NO right to.
They game the system for every penny they can get, they have jobs..AND NO IT IS NOT JOBS WE WON"T DO! It is because illegals work cheap, and in essence WE ARE PROVIDING FOR THEIR FAMILIES! They have kids they can't afford then expect US to provide for their family when we can barely take care of their own.

    I'm with you ReggieMay!

When I was growing up we had laws and they were enforced. Now it's a pick and choose kind of thing, or new laws to enforce existing laws. Like what the hell???

Sadly, there are people all over the world who live like that. We can't save the entire world. It is not possible. We even have people here living in dangerous neighborhoods where parents fear for their lives and that of their children. Seeing how thousands of our citizens are losing their lives to illegals begging to stay here, our laws must be enforced. That our goverment caters to illegals while our citizens fall through the cracks, struggle and suffer is insane!

Our government sould be enforcing our laws to protect the economic health of US citizens not he citizens of a country that we financially support. From the breakdown at Just the Facts on foreign aid to Honduras, it seems that we are spending a lot of money and arms to Honduras and the people are oppressed and "have" to illegally enter this country for afety? Who is benefiting from the money and what are we paying for in Honduras?

According to news reports, aid was suspended to Hunduras in 2009 by Sec. Clinton, but the numbers from Just the Facts show that the aid kept on rolling on in 2009 and every year since?

U.S. Suspends Foreign Aid to Honduras

Posted by Fausta Wertz at 4:33 AM

Following a meeting of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with deposed Honduran president Manuel Zelaya, the US State Department hardened its position on Honduras as it announced today it's terminating foreign aid to Honduras:
The Department of State announces the termination of a broad range of assistance to the government of Honduras as a result of the coup d’etat that took place on June 28. The Secretary already had suspended assistance shortly after the coup. The Secretary of State has made the decision, consistent with U.S. legislation, recognizing the need for strong measures in light of the continued resistance to the adoption of the San Jose Accord by the de facto regime and continuing failure to restore democratic, constitutional rule to Honduras.
In addition to having temporarily suspended $35 million in aid after Zelaya was ousted, the State Department declared it's in the process of revoking the visas of "individual members and supporters of the de facto regime."The question remains as to what will happen with $200 million in Millenium Challege funds. The board of the fund meets next week.

Very importantly, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly also announced during the briefing that "at this moment, we would not be able to support the outcome of the scheduled elections." The State Department says,
A presidential election is currently scheduled for November. That election must be undertaken in a free, fair and transparent manner. It must also be free of taint and open to all Hondurans to exercise their democratic franchise. At this moment, we would not be able to support the outcome of the scheduled elections. A positive conclusion of the Arias process would provide a sound basis for legitimate elections to proceed. We strongly urge all parties to the San Jose talks to move expeditiously to agreement.
The U.S. is insisting that Honduras accept in full the San José Accord, which was proposed by Costa Rican president Oscar Arias. Arias’s seven-point proposal would have a deposed president reinstated even as he has been charged with “crimes against the form of government, treason, abuse of authority, against the public and the State of Honduras” and providing him amnesty; forming a government of unelected officials; transferring power unconstitutionally among the branches of government; and the formation of an extra-constitutional commission composed of foreign officials which would be in charge of “compliance of these agreements,” as if Hondurans themselves could not. The Honduran Supreme Court ruled that any political agreement derived from the San José Accord should be in compliance with Honduras's laws and constitution and the country's rule of law.
Last Thursday Honduran president Roberto Micheletti had offered to step down if Zelaya also renounced his claim to the presidency.
In response to the State Department's actions today, Roberto Micheletti regretted that "the U.S. has taken the side of Hugo Chavez."
After the Honduran courts and electoral board had declared Manuel Zelaya's proposed referendum unlawful and unconstitutional, he had the ballots printed and flown in from Caracas.
