Illegal Immigrant Roundup on Bald Head Island

Aug 10, 2006 11:16 PM EDT

AUGUST 10, 2006 -- Twenty-two illegal workers were arrested and are now waiting to be deported.

The Coast Guard stopped four boats on their way to Bald Head Island Tuesday morning. The illegal workers were heading to construction jobs on Bald Head.

Contractors coming into Southport from Bald Head are sharing different opinions about the illegal immigrants that are working on the island.

Some say it doesn't make sense to hire illegal workers, but others say no American citizens want to take those jobs.

The 22 workers plead guilty in Federal Court to a misdemeanor offense of illegal entry into the U.S.

The roundup was conducted with the U.S. Coast Guard as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
