Mexican illegal mother makes kids cross Rio Grande

Now if this isn't the poster child for the "worst parent ever"....she's an illegal Mexican woman, who takes her kids back to Mexico for a vist, then makes them cross into the U.S. illegally again via the Rio Grande and one of them drowns....

If she's here, she should be charged with child abuse, reckless/endangerment of a minor and she should be jailed and deported along with the rest of her illegal alein family. Ya es hora.

Missing 16-year-old Immigrant May Have Drowned in Rio Grande

    Reported by Ray Pedraza

An illegal immigrant who recently buried her mother in Mexico may now have to bury her son.

Elizabeth Espinosa said her son may have drowned while crossing the Rio Grande near Progreso Sunday night.

Espinosa told Action 4 News that she and her three boys were coming back from her mother's funeral.

She said her youngest son, 16-year-old David Urbina, was latched onto the back of her eldest son when suddenly they both went under.

Espinosa said her son David yelled and yelled, "Mom, save me!" But she replied, "Son, I'm drowning too".

    David never resurfaced.

Espinosa said she pleaded with Border Patrol to search the area and was initially told she'd have to wait two to three days. But federal agents were on scene a short while later.

In a circumstance like this, we posed the question to Border Patrol: When do agents decide to conduct a search or call off a search?

Rio Grande Valley sector spokesman Oscar Saldaña said agents responded within hours in this particular instance.

They called in assistance from the Weslaco Fire Department and dragged the river in addition using a helicopter to search by air.

Saldaña said in all rescues, the safety of everyone involved is top priority but the resources and timing of the search depends on the circumstances of each case.

So far, David Urbina has not been found.

If you have any information for Border Patrol agents on the case, you're urged to call them at (800) 863-9382.

    Mexican illegal

Is there ANY good reason Mexico did not join the search???

Everyone blames the US for these deaths. The Mexican people and their worthless government are responsible.

I cannot fathom a mother who would do this to her own children. I gave up my career to give my son 24-hour medical support during several open-heart and other surgeries. His life is precious to me - I brought him into the world - I am responsible for his well-being. His smile is all the payback I need.
Yes - let's blame the border patrol for not getting there sooner. Seems she chose the spot to cross based on the fact they WEREN'T around. I have been sympathetic to what NAFTA has done to Mexican farmers but this situation was entirely preventable. She valued being there after her mother died more than being a good mother to her living children. So she's now on American soil just like she wanted - time for some American justice. Charge her with 2nd-degree murder since this was no accident. He was clinging to his brother before crossing? Take her children away. Jail and deportation. Enough is enough.

Hey we had a woman charged with neglect because it was freezing cold, she was pumping gas and left the car running to keep her baby warm....some guy jumped in the other side and took off with car. She didn't leave the child to go inside to pay or anything...she was literally pumping gas.....right there....but no leaving the car running......neglect......they have parents in a no-win situation yet ignore true neglect like this woman. Some example.....

I thought family values didn't stop at the Rio Grande.

How could any mother not give her own life trying to save her child?

Is it me, or that a weird thing to say to your kid who's begging for your help? Another death America is responsible for because we won't give them amnesty. A mother should know better.

I predict that the teen is dead, don't they sell life jackets in Mexico? That mother is too impersonal to not aid her son in time of crisis, she'll be dealt out justice.

She said her youngest son, 16-year-old David Urbina, was latched onto the back of her eldest son when suddenly they both went under.

    David never resurfaced.
    Something not right here....................
David was LATCHED onto the back of her eldest son--by what means was he 'latched'? Merely riding piggy-back? Why didn't the eldest son also drown if 'latched together'--while underwater did he 'unlatch' David before he surfaced? A 16 year old is pretty much grown, so why 'latch' him to his brother's back?--I could understand being connected by a rope but 'latched'?

Both boys went under....David yelled, "Mom , save me!"....But she replied, Son, I'm drowning too"......David NEVER resurfaced.........
If both boys went under and David never resurfaced how could he have cried out for help?

I wonder if something happened to David in Mexico and he really died there......tanslation problems....or reporter's slant?

If this mother knew they would be crossing the Rio Grande, why didn't they have any type of flotation devices? How much do those styrofoam poles that kids use in pools cost? $1.50? How does a mother tell her child she can't help him? If I was stupid enough to put my kids in that situation, I still wouldn't be heartless enough to tell him I was drowning too. I would die for my kids. She made no attempt to help. The last words he heard from her told him her life was more important than his. She wanted to save her own life, not risk it to attempt to help her drowning son. I don't understand why people like to say people from this country value their families more than Americans value theirs, yet they seem to be fine with putting their kids in life-threatening situations just so they can make more money. On one hand, they say their law breaking (coming into the US illegally) should be ignored, because they just want their kids to have a better life, on the other hand, look what they do to the kids to get them here: attempt to swim across the Rio Grande, walk many miles through the desert in 120 degree weather with a gallon of water, trust strangers with their daughters (and sons, but girls are more likely to be raped), all for a buck. And again and again, the so-called mothers aren't charged with neglect or abuse, and their kids remain in their custody.
